Compton 2

This 3.5 mile walk starts from Compton Street, climbs up to the ridge above the village with views out across the valley, returning via Oliver's Battery. A mixture of yew tree tunnels and open country with two small nature reserves. It can be very muddy in winter.

Park where you can in Compton Street and take the track up beside the church.

There are a number of different paths and routes that can be taken to make a walk to fit your distance needs.

Follow the path up to the T junction and turn right to follow along the hill. If muddy continue to the top of the hill and follow the road to the right.

Continue on the path along the hill until you reach another T-junction. Turn left to the climb the hill. At the top, turn right to follow the track.

Continue along the top of the hill, veering to the right to follow the path to the outskirts of Oliver's Battery -so called because it is believed to be the spot where Oliver Cromwell bombarded the City of Winchester during the Civil War.

A short distance after the Oliver's Battery Wildlife Area, at the crossroads, turn right to take the track back to Compton Street.
