Long Mynd

This 9.6 mile walk is an easy route following the crest of the Long Mynd with no hard climbs. There are plenty of opportunities to deviate off to create shorter, longer of more challenging walks.

Park in the Shooting Box Car Park, cross the road and follow the Jack Mytton Way (named after a 19th century MP who quit after 2 hours in the House of Commons) south to Pole Bank and keep going.

There is a short stretch along the edge of the narrow tarmac road, before cutting round the Midland Gliding Club (with a clubhouse dating back to the 1930s) on a permissive path with stunning views of the valley below.

Region the bridle path until the final peak at Black Knoll. The path then starts to slope down. Where the right of way cuts across the root, take it to the left, over a stile into fields.

The path follows the contours round, into a second field (take the right hand gate to stay to the right of the fence).

This then follows the edge of a wood of spruce trees before re-joining the original path which you retrace back to the car park enjoying the views the opposite way round. Vary the return by not taking the permissive path but continuing on the Right of Way through the middle of the gliding club. This allows a closer view of the catapult system for launching the gliders. Although the signs "invite" you to avoid this, we found the gliding members very happy to explain how things worked and what they were doing.
