Stanmer Park, Brighton

This 5.4 mile walk starts and finishes at the Stanmer Park car park, Brighton. It takes you through woodland up on to the downs with glimpsed views out across the hills and down to Brighton. There are plenty of opportunities to shorten or lengthen the loop to suit your walking needs.

1.

From the main car park at the entrance to the park, take the diagonal path on the left hand side of the road up the hill towards the woods. Follow this path through the woods, out into the open pasture (watch out for livestock in the fields if you are dog walking).

2.

When you meet the main road, you can either continue parallel to the road or cross over for for a path with great views of the hills and Brighton. My route crossed the road.

Follow the track along the edge of the pasture, admiring the views on either side and respecting the sheep. At the bottom corner where several paths converge, leave the track and take the right of way path diagonally back up the field, over two sile and back onto the road.

3.

Cross over the road and turn left onto the path parallel to the road. At the farm building, where the path again joins the road, turn right and follow the bridle path through the woods.

Stay on this path as it loops round the northern end of Stanmer Park and back along the hill between the park and University of Sussex.

At points here you get glimpses of 18th century Stanmer House and the University of Sussex.

4.

Towards the end of your walk you pass by a strange circular pond on your left, before finally cross by the sports fields back to the car park.
