Firle Beacon Circuit

Post date: 27-Jan-2020 21:43:25

This 5.5 mile circular walk, takes you down a quiet chalk dry valley south with extensive downland views. It returns along the ridge, following a stretch of the South Downs Way.

Start and finish at the Firle Beacon car park grid reference TQ 467058. Do not put "Firle Beacon" into the satnav as it is likely to try and take you along farm tracks up to the beacon itself. Take the Firle village turning south from the A27 and continue along the road, past the village and up the hill to the car park.

  1. From the car park, follow the road south, down the hill, through the farm and stay on the grassy bridle path. Even in January, there was much birdsong along the wilder stretches of the path.
  2. At the bottom of the valley you meet a 'T' junction of paths. The one right takes you into town. Take the path to the left, up the hill, keeping the field boundary on your right.
  3. Stay on the path all the way up the hill until you come out of the fields and join the South Downs Way along the ridge of the hill. Turn left and continue past the Trig Point on Firle Beacon itself and continue back to the car park. There are stunning views in all directions along this stretch.
