WHEW?! October was CRAZY, BUSY and it hasn’t stopped??!! Wellness Wishes for you today after a 5 month hiatus . . .
Wellness comes in several flavors! Physical health, emotional health, mental, spiritual and relational too. Today I was thinking about what a difference “relationship” makes. It’s difficult to measure how comforting and supportive it is to have a friend help you wade through the waters. I am so thankful to work in an environment where colleagues are friends. We are not in the boat alone. Reach out and grab someone’s helping hand if you spring a leak between now and the end of the year!
We’re thinking GREEN in the month of March so here’s an Irish Saying:
There are good ships and wood ships,
Ships that sail the sea,
But the best ships are friendships,
And may they always be.
You can’t direct the wind, but you can adjust the sails . . . let’s keep our boats afloat TOGETHER!

Because wellness comes in all flavors, I thought we'd concentrate on a strategy to strengthen physical, mental, social AND emotional wellness this month!
How often do you laugh? "Laughter is the best medicine."
Laughter is a powerful antidote to stress, pain, and conflict. Nothing works faster or more dependably to bring your mind and body back into balance than a good laugh. Laughter makes you feel good. And the good feeling that you get when you laugh remains with you even after the laughter subsides. Humor helps you keep a positive, optimistic outlook through difficult situations, disappointments, and loss.
Physical Health Benefits:
Boosts immunity
Lowers stress hormones
Decreases pain
Relaxes your muscles
Prevents heart disease
Mental Health Benefits:
Adds joy and zest to life
Eases anxiety and fear
Relieves stress
Improves mood
Enhances resilience
Social Benefits:
Strengthens relationships
Attracts others to us
Enhances teamwork
Helps defuse conflict
Promotes group bonding

So if you haven't laughed today . . .
Why is a rabbit like a dime? Because he has a head on one end and a tail on the other . . .
Okay, maybe you still haven't laughed today?! Catch a chuckle when you can and BE WELL!

Q: How many carrots can a 500 hundred pound rabbit eat?
A: As many as he wants . . .
Q: How can you tell if a 500 pound rabbit is under your bed?
A: You can touch the ceiling with your nose . . .
Was this at least an ounce of fun?!
April 3, 2014--Laugh About these Books
The next “Elephant and Piggie,” My New Friend is So Fun!, comes out June 3! Do you know these good books? They are written by Mo Willems (Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Goldilocks and the Three Dinosaurs, That is NOT a Good Idea!, Amanda and Her Alligator) The guy’s a genius—the “Dr. Seuss” of our times. They are Mrs. M-C’s favorite reads, and they are SURE to put a SMILE on your face.
“Gerald is careful. Piggie is not.
Piggie cannot help smiling. Gerald can.
Gerald worries so that Piggie does not have to.
Gerald and Piggie are best friends.
In My New Friend Is So Fun!, Piggie has found a new friend! But is Gerald ready to share?”
“SMILING makes things easier.” I can’t remember where I heard or read this yesterday . . .
BE WELL--Lift the corners of your mouth towards your ears today!
Sunday, April 6, 2014 -- Weekend Wellness Wishes
Saturday morning on npr (National Public Radio), the People's Pharmacy highlighted:
Jordan Metzl, MD, a nationally known sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He completed his fellowship in sports medicine and dance medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children's Hospital. He is the author of The Athlete's Book of Home Remedies and The Exercise Cure. His website is: http://www.drjordanmetzl.com/
His concept is to prescribe EXERCISE as MEDICINE. He shared about ideas for "incentivizing" moving your body?! All very PROACTIVE (Happy Kid Habit #1)!
I was also reading a book this weekend by Sadie Nardini, another New Yorker -- "When you become masterful at self-nourishment, resentment and annoyance at life's inevitable malfunctions will lessen and soon hold very little power over you at all."
Sounds like what we need to hear the week before Spring Break . . . MOVE and TAKE CARE OF YOU so you can do what do, OPTIMALLY.
Be WELL this week and ALWAYS!

A: A chili dog on a bun.
Q: What kind of rabbit can jump higher than a house?
A: All kinds! Houses can't jump.
Q: How is a rabbit like a cornstalk?
A: They both have big ears.
Laugh and be well!
Thursday, June 5, 2014--De-Clutter Your Summer and BEE WELL!
What's the BUZZ on Thursday afternoon? One final wellness tip for the 2013-14 school year. These are some ideas for kiddos, but I'm thinking as we "Sharpen our Saw" in June and July, some of these tips might be a good fit:
TIP: Declutter Your Summer
All kinds of benefits are purported from living a less cluttered life - including less stress, more money and a happier family life. Here are a few simple ways to get started.
In the home.
Playing outside is so much fun, kids may feel less attached to toys and games that can be passed along. Summer is a great time for a garage sale where you can declutter and teach some basic entrepreneurial skills to the kids.
In the schedule.
Is your family's summer schedule filled with camps and vacations or open and unstructured? It's nice to have a balance of open schedules with a few exciting camps to attend and a family vacation or two. Is there anything in your summer schedule that can be sent the way of the old games and toys?
These are simple thoughts but encourage us to seek balance! I read these in the June Global Family Yoga "Tips, Tools & Techniques" (http://globalfamilyyoga.com/) and thought they'd be good to share.
You can make the world a better place like only you can do it! Have a BEE-utiful summer. BEE WELL and let your little lights SHINE!
Buzzing Off!

July 8, 2014 -- A Summer Wellness Wish
Hope you are enjoying your vacation! After we celebrate July 4th, I always think, "Now, what did I want to get done this summer?! I'd better get on it!" because it seems we're on the downhill side of summer after the holiday!
I read this on Glennon Melton's blog today and wanted to share. Julia Johnson, our occupational therapist, shared this author with me. She writes Carry On, Warrior: The Power of Embracing Your Messy, Beautiful Life. Here's a snippet from the blog:
"Your body is not your offering. It’s just a really amazing paintbrush which you can use to create your offering each day. Don’t curse your paintbrush. Don’t sit in a corner wishing you had a different paintbrush. You’re wasting time. You’ve got the one you got. Be grateful, because without it you’d have nothing with which to paint your life’s work. Your life’s work is the love you give and receive- and your body is the instrument you use to accept and offer love on your soul’s behalf.
Your body is not your masterpiece – your life is.
It is suggested to us a million times a day that our BODIES are PROJECTS. They aren’t. Our lives are. Our spirituality is. Our relationships are. Our work is."

I hope you are taking care of the vehicle that carries you on your life's journey this summer! I appreciated the reminder that I strive for wellness and balance so I can make the world a better place. :-)
See you all soon. Happy Painting!
