Jessica’s “Daily Affirmation”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qR3rK0kZFkg
I read about this in “Lesson 13” of Be the Miracle: 50 Lessons for Making the Impossible Possible by Regina Brett. Janet and Hope recommended this good book, and I’ve appreciated what I’ve read so far! I thought this was a neat tie in with the previous wish to treat yourself with kindness and care and try some positive self talk. I think Jessica takes it to the NEXT LEVEL. When you are ready to KICK IT UP A NOTCH, give ‘er a try!
Happy Wellness on Wednesday!
Thursday, 5/17/12
Thrilled on Thursday to share Wellness Wishes! I didn’t even THINK about Wellness Wishes on Wednesday . . . we are all busy, busy, busy this time of year.
My husband and I heard a lady on Saturday’s NPR “The People’s Pharmacy” that I wanted to share. Gretchen Reynolds wrote the book The First 20 Minutes: Surprising Science Reveals How We Can: Exercise Better, Train Smarter, Live Longer. I was encouraged how you don’t have to run marathons or bike for three hours a day for better health! When you have time to read, check out her interview @ http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/05/04/the-surprising-shortcut-to-better-health/

Here's some exercises to strenghthen another CORE we have in COMMON!
Double-Leg Stretch (p. 96, June 2012 Prevention Magazine)
Lie faceup on mat, bringing knees toward chest. Drawing abs in tight, lift head and shoulders off mat, resting hands by knees. Inhale, extending arms, biceps by ears, while extending legs 45 degrees from mat. Exhaling, sweep arms around sides and forward while drawing knees back toward chest, ending with hands by knees. Repeat. Do 10-15 reps.
Side Plank (p. 98, June 2012 Prevention Magazine)
Kneel with right hand on mat, alighned under right shoulder, with fingers pointing right. Straighten left leg, placing toes on mat. Extend left arm directly above shoulder, keeping hips lifted and head in line with spine. Hold here for 30 to 60 seconds. Switch sides and repeat.
Swimmer (p. 100, June 2012 Prevention Magazine)
Lie facedown on mat, hands near sides with elbows bent and legs extended. Lift chest off mat, keeping arms bent. Lift and lower right leg, then left, moving from hips (not knees). Continue, alternating legs, for 20 reps.
Happy Wellness on a Wednesday!
Wednesday, 5/2/12
We now have 4 Wednesdays to go in the 2011-12 school year!
Today’s reminder is to SHARPEN THE SAW: Balance Feels BEST! It was CRACKIN’ ME UP that Carolyn, Vangie and I taught this 40 times during benchmarking??!! How ironic was that?! We were TOTALLY out of balance . . .
The concept addresses body, heart, mind and soul balance. Too much of any good thing is TOO MUCH. So as we hit the last 22 days of this school year, don’t forget to incorporate a little “quiet time.” Include some exercise and a little family and friends time too. WE KNOW you are working your mind, we just don’t want you to LOSE IT . . . J
At the school counselor meeting today, Mr. Jeff Caldwell reminded us about the flight attendant’s instruction, in the event of emergency, to put the oxygen mask on yourself FIRST so then you can help others! It may not be EMERGENCY time, but it’s “URGENCY time” this time of year, and I think the strategy might be helpful as we make our “final approach.”
Here’s to a safe, smooth landing of school year 2011-12! NO CRASHIN’ and BURNIN’ on the PHES landing strip.
Happy Wellness on a Wednesday (ooh, and I spelled it correct this week!! Must be in my RIGHT mind or at least a little more balanced today?),

Wednesday, 4/25/12
It’s funny how ideas go around and around. It’s when they come back around that second and third time that kind of grabs your attention. Last week I read I Like Me by Nancy Carlson to second grade, and I emphasized the positive self-talk in the book. The pig in this story says, “When I get up in the morning, I say “Hi, Good-Looking!” What you say to yourself counts. You believe what you say to yourself--so why not say something positive!
The topic at Weight Watchers Monday night was the power of positive self-talk too! We discussed how we say things to ourselves that we would NEVER say to a friend . . . my “take away” was to be more “encouraging” to myself . . .
Hope you’re WELL on WEDNESDAY! Only five more Wednesdays this year . . .
Wednesday, 4/18/12--Encourage Courage when Discouraged . . .
I thought we’d wrap the year with “Wellness Wishes on Wednesdays!” Did you know there are only 6 more Wednesdays . . . if you have a tip or thought to share, please let me know, and I’ll pass it on!
I went to my knee doctor on Monday and he discouraged walking . . . my left knee is wearing out and my right knee if following suit. What a BUMMER. I LOVE WALKING. He encouraged a stationary bike and water aerobics/swimming. So today, I’d like to share three great picture books for how to pick up the pieces when you’re broken:
One of Those Days by Amy Krouse Rosenthal
Perfect Square by Michael Hall
It's a Bad Day by Mary Ellen Friday
Reslience. That’s a great word. Think about what you CAN do and not what you CAN’T. That’s my brave plan, at least, and I wanted to share it with you.
Happy Wellness on a Wednesday!
Wednesday, 5/30/12--Wellness Wishes on Wednesday
I hope you are enjoying a Wonderful Wednesday! Here’s one final “wish for wellness” this school year.
I’m finishing up John Smoltz’s book, Starting and Closing: Perseverance, Faith and One More Year. John Smoltz was a starting pitcher and closer for the Atlanta Braves. His number is being retired in a couple weeks @ Turner Field. I’ve always been a fan of Smoltz, but I’ve really enjoyed learning more about John Smoltz the person. Here’s some connections I thought were timely and wanted to share:
At the beginning of his career, Smoltz remembers Ted Simmons, a veteran big leaguer, who shared tips with him and other young pitchers—
“Listen,” he said, “you guys have got to go get yourself an outlet from baseball. Find something you like to do and go do it. If you can’t find a way to get away from the game, it’ll eat you up. It will consume you.” pp. 135-136
“Over the years I developed a routine that helped me balance the demands of playing baseball, the escape of playing golf, and my responsibilities as a husband and father.” p. 140
Smoltz’s outlet was golf. He contributes golf to his success and longevity in the major leagues. What is your outlet? I think as veteran educator, now of 21 years, that’s a tip for us as well. It’s easy for our craft to consume our energy and enthusiasm. Enjoy your outlet this summer, whatever it may be.
I think I’m gonna get on my bike and do some pedaling! Be Well and Happy Summer,
D
