Hunter and His Amazing Remote Control -- 1/26/2021
This curriculum is written by Dr. Lori Copeland. We are working through the idea that we each have a self-control remote control. Last week, we talked about the concept of a remote. If you're watching the YouTube channel, you can use the remote to switch to another channel, like Disney Channel or Nick, Jr. The idea is to pretend and work a remote control for yourself and for the choices you make each day. If you're thinking about recess when it's time to think about a math lesson, you have to "change your channel." Today we discussed the "Pause" button. Pressing pause stops what you are watching so you can come back to it later. It's like how you might put a bookmark in a longer story to hold your place. When pausing on the self-control remote control, you stop and take a deep breath to check in with yourself to make a BEST decision next. We practiced ways to pause and take a deep breath:
Hoberman Sphere Breathing: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/hoberman
Counting Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/countingbreath
Dog Panting Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/dogpanting
Bunny Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/bunny
Crocodile Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/crocodile
Candle/Flower Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/candleflower
Each week will have a game or exercise to practice the concept. Then we'll color that button on our "remote control." These are made of foam with the paper buttons hot glued on the front. Students will take them home at the end of the lessons!
Next week we'll explore the Fast Forward Button!

Like the pause button, the fast forward button is also a tool to remember to think before you act. If you zip ahead to see how a decision will play out, you can better choose to follow through or not. The game we played to practice this concept was "Yeti in My Spaghetti!" Picking a noodle that would NOT cause the yeti to fall into the spaghetti bowl creates the opportunity to think before you choose. You can also practice with a game of pick up sticks/drinking straws. Thinking about what happens next is another great strategy on the Self-Control Remote Control!
2/8/2021 -- Rewind
When you make a mistake, instead of saying, "I should have" say "Next time." We practiced learning from mistakes, having a "growth mindset," with the rewind process. Press rewind and zip back. How would you do things differently if you could have a "do over." Use that reflection and review to help yourself make better choices in the future!
2/17/2021 -- Slow Motion -- https://youtu.be/HA9WVLlxsdc (1:37)
Slow Motion -- Be the tortoise not the hare! Take your time . . . slow and steady wins the race. Turtle hands are described on "vitaminDB" (Mrs. Broam's Hat Blog): http://vitamindb.blogspot.com/2019/11/turtle-hands.html
2/23/2021 -- Coach Button
The focus of the "Coach Button" is on problem-solving strategies. How will you solve a problem when Mrs. Hardy, Mrs. Stasio, Mom or Dad is not around? We practiced the STAR problem-solving decision model: http://vitamindb.blogspot.com/2019/04/star-problem-solving-model.html
3/2/2021 -- Zapper
This button is to "zap" unhealthy, unrealistic thinking patterns:
ZAP -- It is terrible and awful to make a mistake.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- Everyone makes mistakes.
ZAP -- If someone doesn't agree with me, they probably don't like me.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- Good friends disagree sometimes.
ZAP -- If my parents really cared about me, they would always let me do what I want to do.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- I won't always get to do what I want to do.

3/9/2021 -- Way to Go!
The "Way to Go!" button is the final button on the remote control. Being proud of successes and incorporating positive self-talk, keeps us motivated to give our best efforts every day! Share with your child the strengths you recognize in him or her! Model how to press the "Way to Go!" button so it will be easier for our children to know how to use it well.
