4th Grade--Coping
Materials: Speakers, phone with music, Pete the Cat, access to T: Drive or flash drive, rock, Play Doh, croaking frog, Perfect Square
Students completed "Student Guidance Needs Surveys" while I set up the SmartNotebook lesson. Play soft music while students work.
Introduce the concept of coping with Pete the Cat--it's ALL GOOD. We've got to keep that "BIG Picture" thought in mind as we deal with the YUCK that comes our way.
Use the slide with "clay" and "rock" problem definitions to introduce these two kinds of challenges.
Have one student manipulate the clay and one student try to change the rock for 30 seconds or so, kinda like a contest.
Use the "swirling vortex" slide to go through examples of each, then share "Coping Strategies" slide. Croak the frog when each "A OK" coping strategy is introduced.
Conclude with the slide sharing 3 C's--Ways to ATTACK a Problem--Control, Change, and Cope.
Wrap up lesson with Perfect Square! Remind about making lemonade with the lemons encountered, "it's ALL GOOD" and worth it.
Have students share the "A Okay" strategies for coping with a problem, just to reinforce one last time. Thumbs up, thumbs down would be a good assessment too . . .
Johnny falls down on the way to recess and gets mad and throws rocks . . . not "A Okay" . . .
Lisa's best friend is playing with another friend and she is sad so she finds Jill and asked her to jump rope . . . "A Okay" . . .
Collect guidance surveys if complete.
