Hunter and His Amazing Remote Control -- 2/26/19
This curriculum is written by Dr. Lori Copeland. We briefly met and shared the concept of a remote. If you're watching the YouTube channel, you can use the remote to switch to another channel, like Disney Channel or Nick, Jr. The idea is to pretend and work a remote control for yourself and for the choices you make each day. If you're thinking about recess when it's time to think about a math lesson, you have to "change your channel." Next week we'll meet to discuss the "Pause" button. Each week will have a game or exercise to practice the concept. Then we'll color that button on our "remote control." These are made of foam with the paper buttons hot glued on the front. Here's the mornings we will work together:
Thursday, 3/7
Tuesday, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26
Wednesday, 4/3, 4/10
Our sessions are 10-15 minutes, and today we met around 10:00-10:15. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you for sharing your child with me!
3/7/19 -- PAUSEabilities
We explored the "pause" button on our remote controls today. One child described it as a "FREEZE" button! Perfect! You stop and take a deep breath to check in with yourself to make a BEST decision next. We practiced four ways to take a deep breath:
Bellows Breath: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOpP5s4g6-0
Counting Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/countingbreath
Dog Panting Breath: https://sites.google.com/site/mrsbroam/home/breathing/dogpanting
Ferris Wheel Breath: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKoC7QDTn5U
We took deep breaths to pause and consider if we should:
Smile--YES
Stand on a Library Bookcase--NO
Shake Hands with a Friend--YES
Stick Out Your Tongue at a Friend--NO
We did many practices like the above. We wrapped by reading Pauseabilities by Frank J. Sileo. Next week we'll explore the Fast Forward Button!
3/12/19 -- Fast Forward
Like the pause button, the fast forward button is also a tool to remember to think before you act. If you zip ahead to see how a decision will play out, you can better choose to follow through or not. The game we played to practice this concept was "Yeti in My Spaghetti!" Students had to pick a noodle that would NOT cause the yeti to fall into the spaghetti bowl. Thinking about what happens next is another great strategy on the Self-Control Remote Control!
3/20/19 -- Rewind
When you make a mistake, instead of saying, "I should have" say "Next time." We practiced learning from mistakes, having a "growth mindset," with the rewind process. Press rewind and zip back. How would you do things differently if you could have a "do over." Use that reflection and review to help yourself make better choices in the future!
3/26/19 -- Slow Motion
"The slow motion button involves more than just slowing down and being more careful. This button can be used to teach stress management skills such as the identification and appropriate expression of feelings, and relaxation training."~Hunter and His Amazing Remote Control by Lori Copeland . We practiced three relaxation strategies today! The turtle hand, the bear walk, and "Palm Calm." Turtle hands are described on "vitaminDB" (Mrs. Broam's Hat Blog)! Click on the link https://vitamindb.blogspot.com/search?q=turtle+tuesday, and scootch down to the September 13, 2016 post for those directions. Here's a YouTube on how to walk like a bear: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFj5aClyjwE. Here's a YouTube about the Palm Calm technique: https://youtu.be/MPHzM2nxvfI. Next week we'll learn about how to "coach" or cheer yourself on when practicing the strategies we've discussed so far.
4/3/19 -- Coach
The focus of the "Coach Button" is on problem-solving strategies. We practiced the STAR problem-solving decision model!

4/10/19 -- Zapper
This button is to "zap" unhealthy, unrealistic thinking patterns:
ZAP -- It is terrible and awful to make a mistake.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- Everyone makes mistakes.
ZAP -- If someone doesn't agree with me, they probably don't like me.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- Good friends disagree sometimes.
ZAP -- If my parents really cared about me, they would always let me do what I want to do.
Thumbs Up Thinking -- I won't always get to do what I want to do.

4/29/19 -- Way to Go
The "Way to GO" button is the final button on the remote control. Thank you to parents and teachers for sharing the strengths you recognize in our group participants. Being proud of successes and incorporating positive self-talk, keeps us motivated to give our best efforts every day!
