Myocarditis

Inflammatory process. Cause may be infectious.

• • Viral, ricketssial, bacterial, and parasitic infection

  • Common viruses include enteroviruses (coxsackie B, and echovirus), adenovirus, HHV-6, parvovirus B1-19, and many others.

  • Also a rare complication of smallpox vaccination

Dxtic testing:

• • Nasopharyngeal swab testing, serology, and PCR studies may be performed for viruses.

  • Tissue dx via endomyocardial bx may be helpful.

Tx:

• • Therapeutic regimen should be targeted to the identified agent.
