Behavior change in addiction - stages

6 stages of behavior change in addicted personalties:

    • Precontemplation = denies problem; no intention of changing

    • Contemplation = Acknowledges problem; seriously thinks about solving it

    • Preparation = Committed to action; needs to plan

    • Action = Modifies behavior and surroundings

    • Maintenance = At risk for relapse if not committed to following through with changes

    • Termination = No continuing effort needed; addiction no longer a threat.
