Players can invest skill experience in a feature known as Contingency Planning.
This serves as an automation of sorts, and adapts to a more macro-style game experience. While it cannot provide the specific and exquisite on-the-fly decision making benefits of the human mind, it can control your character while you are idle or logged off from the persistent world.
Examples include:
Returning to the smelter with scrap metal to forge into ingots.
Eating available food to stave away hunger.
Rudimentary combat choices.
Going to a specific location and setting up your store.
Traveling to the nearest Safe Area after logging out.
