There are a large number of quests and encounters in Ephemeral Respite. Generally the rewards for the completion of a quest or overcoming of an encounter are relative to the risk involved. (Low risk = small gain, etc.)
Single player:
The core quest line in the open world will begin with the character in a ship just having docked on Calydon at The Laphrion. The player is expecting a warm welcome by InTech, but the bay doors open to greet them with instead a desolate cold scene with tumbleweeds.
The character is first lead along the road to Modoc, where they meet the Collapse Recovery Archivists and learn more background on Calydon, and hear about the obscure Hemato Poets on the island of Wakwak. They will continue down to Tin Can Central, which will act as a quest hub and base of operations. The quest line will lead the character in an arch through the north, the players traverse Northwest Passage through the Treacherous Peaks, meeting the Mountain Warriors, leading them to the mysterious Laphrion. The Main quest will carry players to Coldwest via gravtrain, and continue to Maranatha, where they will encounter the confrontational Fallacy Fairies.
This will be a point of major divergence, depending on the player's choice, where they will be given the option to divest themselves of mechanical technology and join the Fairies, or find themselves surrounded by hostiles and require refuge at Thurrok, where they will be introduced to the Frumentarii.
If the character joins the Fairies, they will be encouraged to join an entourage to attack and take a sector of Sebastopol, or if they did not join, be encouraged to join the resistance in the city. In either case, they will need to fight their way through the Reaper Camp where they meet the fierce Reapers.
Either taking or defending the sector of Sebastopol, the character will be introduced to the Humanists and learn of the corrupting influence of the gun-toting Chestonites. As either a Fairy or non-Fairy, this will lead the character on a journey through the GRIEF, meeting the Radchildren, across Blackwater Lake to Thermopoli where they meet the Lagos Nomads and the Kaiju. Allies met along the way will engage with them at their final encounter with the Chestonites in Anchorsteam, to either deal with the shadow organization that is corrupting Sebastopol, or to undo their technology-driven drive that threatens to quite literally tear apart Calydon.
MMO:
Players will start with the first character in Tin Can Central, and will play through a series of introductory quests that introduce the basics of gamplay and nature of Calydon. The character will receive their Cavelink and be given access to their personal Matrix.
