On the standard server, a character needs to eat. On the casual server, there are no penalties for lack of food.
There are numerous consumable food items across Calydon.
Appetite operates as a counting number from 1-100. The baseline Appetite for characters is 1 every minute. When the maximum level of Appetite is reached, negative statuses begin to affect the character (Hungry, Famished).
You can flag items for automatic consumption at max appetite, in which case you will automatically eat the highest weight to satiation item in your inventory that has been flagged.
Some edible items grant bonuses in addition to reducing appetite, and most consumables provide a temporary status effect.
Notably, the Brute has an increased metabolism which effects the rate at which their Appetite grows, and traits such as p21 knockout can be taken which increase metabolism as well. This can be considered a double-edged sword, since it allows the character to consume food more frequently for the benefits they confer, but also means the character must eat more food to maintain themselves.
Trying to eat an item that would put a character below 0 appetite will trigger a popup warning before it is consumed. If the item is consumed anyway, the character is set to the negative value of appetite, which slows the character by a % per negative point.

You are full; trying to eat that might be considered a waste.
[X] Don't ask me that again for {this item type}
[Eat anyway] or [Don't eat]

Characters that habitually eat consumables that put them beyond their eating capacity have a chance to acquire the Overweight status.
Appetite can be effected by statuses such as Nauseous.
