Design Challenge: How might we co-design an empathic culture in our school?

http://j.mp/1QbQUxk

Human-centered design is a process that has been used for decades to create better products, services, experiences, cultures and organizations that keep people’s needs at the core.

You’re invited to learn about and apply human-centered design in this workshop. Using the process and tools developed by IDEO and the Stanford d.school, this workshop will introduce you to human-centered design and help you generate, prototype and test your ideas quickly. We will apply this process to address a practical problem and project.

Meeting Report

Co-Designing our School Empathic Culture Workshop

This workshop was held for the Live Different Team

See the video of there initiative to foster empathy in their program that goes to 300 schools in Canada. "Live Different's Motivational Presentations have emerged as the most popular school assembly in Canada’s public, Catholic, and independent middle and secondary schools. Going beyond motivation, Live Different offers a live, concert-style, school-wide motivational assembly, supplementary class-room workshops, keynote speakers, as well as youth programs and resources that inspire students to take immediate action to make a positive difference in their world".

Check List Instructions for Participants

1. Use good computer equipment:

  • Try to use Google Chrome, it works best for Google Hangouts and MURAL

  • Use as large a screen and as powerful a computer as you can! (and the fastest Internet you can find). Cell phones do not work.

  • Use a mouse. (especially with Mural). Scratch pads are hard to use in MURAL.

  • iPad may not work; best to use a regular computer.

  • Use earbuds to avoid audio feedback.

  • try not to use WiFi but rather a direct connection for better and more reliable internet performance.

  • Agree to stay for the full workshop. We work as a team and having participants leave mid workshop disrupts the flow.

2. We use Google Hangouts On Air for Video Conferencing.

See How to use Google Hangouts

3. View this Video Introduction to Design

4. Before the Workshop - Create an account on Mural.ly

  • click this link to join our work room. http://mur.al/m2rLnN2e

  • We will use the Mural platform for some of our design activities,.

  • We need participants emails, we will invite you to join Mural.

  • Participants will receive an invitation to a Mural room.

  • Before the workshop on the Mural page 1, create a introduction about yourself.

  • Play with the software to get familiar with it.

Hi Edwin,

Thank you so much for so generously investing your time into facilitating these workshops! You do a great job at it. Here are some thoughts

I like... the concise, hands-on introduction to design thinking. I have read about design thinking numerous times, but going through the model in this way made the concepts much more accessible. It was also great to collaborate with such a great group on an important topic.

I wish... that there was more time for the prototype stage and fleshing out a potential solution (tool, resource, etc) a little more fully.

What if... every school went through this type of "condensed" design process? Could it be designed/structured in such a way that, even though very minimalist and rapid, it would be a sufficient catalyst to spark a much greater social movement toward empathy in a school culture?

PS... I think for a number of the participants, Murally was very slow and made the process more cumbersome. You might want to take a look at Trello as a quicker, more lightweight tool. It would be quite a bit different, but might still suit the basic process.

How Might we... have more time for the prototype stage and fleshing out a potential solution (tool, resource, etc) a little more fully?

How Might we... design a "condensed" design process lesson that every school could go through to spark interest in a much greater social movement toward empathy in a school culture ?

How Might we... address the slowness and cumbersomeness of Mural.ly?

Johnny Henderson

Thanks Edwin for your awesome facilitation, It was a pleasure spending time with you!

Here are my 3..

I Like... sharing ideas with like minded people who want to make an impact in students lives.

I wish... we could spend more time mapping out more clearly what it is we can provide schools.

What if.... we took the conclusions we made and the prototype we developed and tried implementing in P.D. setting and seeing the results and refining the product from there.

Jenn Digiandomenico

Thank you once again for facilitating the workshop on Thursday. It was a pleasure.

I like... working within a dynamic team to generate ideas that I may not necessarily have thought of on my own. This process has helped me to consider the question from various perspectives, widening my understanding and curiosity about empathy in schools.

I wish... more educators would make time to consider how they can build a more empathic school. It seems that the topic sometimes falls to the bottom of the priority list, but it would be nice if more people working in schools would intentionally set aside 3-4 hours of time to focus on this.

What if... we explored this even further. If we thought about what the first few steps to actually start building an empathic school culture. If we considered the practical steps to take. If we considered what an empathic school culture looked like from the students', teachers' and parents' perspective.

Thank you Edwin,

Jenn

I like...

No..LOVE..the fact that I was able to feel/be part of a really cool and innovative team, co-designing a more empathic world and school.

I wish...

We could dig deeper into the "The How" of a more empathic school culture.

    • What does the environment look like?

    • What are tools teachers need?

    • What are activities and games for students?

    • What are the details, the specifics to each of these?

What if...

We had a space to continue the conversation. Or each one of us shared three favorite "how's" to teach empathy? Or further recommendations to google post the workshop, especially as we were on a time limit.

Such as...

Jen. My friend created a really cool toolkit on service learning. As you lead service trips, feel free to check it out:

Pam: Have you ever heard of Patrick Jones? He's the "Youtube Math Teacher." I met him last week and he seems like a really cool dude and very passionate about connecting the subject to students in a variety of ways. Also, Better World Education just released lesson plans on Math and Empathy. I recommend everyone check out the organization if you have never heard from them.

Everyone feel free to add me on facebook: Helen Grace King. I have a facebook page of articles I have collected over the past year revolving around empathy.

Pam McCallum

Trisha North

Thank you for facilitating the workshop! It was a great exercise!

I like... That we can gather with like-minded individuals to discuss how empathy can impact our world and our schools.

I wish... Others, especially in our schools, would take time to discuss empathy in the same way. I think this would make a greater impact if everyone were having this conversation, at least once in a while.

What if... We could create the program we discussed. This resource would be a helpful tool for teachers, students and parents when mindfully bringing up the topic of empathy in our schools.

HMW Questions from the feedback

  • How might we spend more time mapping out clearly what it is we can provide schools?

  • How might we test our empathy circle prototype in a real school setting?

  • How might we deeper into the "The How" of a more empathic school culture?

  • How might we design a space to continue the conversation?
