Introduction to Empathic Design Workshop
This is an example of an introduction to Empathic Design workshop which can last from 3 to 5+ hours. This highly participatory and experiential workshop uses empathy as a gateway to creativity, innovation and action.
Workshop Outline
This workshop consists of two parts.
Part one is an empathy circle in which participants dialog with each other using active listening. They are guided through the steps of intention, self-connection, empathic listening, mirrored motions, closing.
Part two uses the Empathic Design process (human-centered design). We will redesign the empathy circle to better address the needs of our partners.
Setting the Stage
We set the stage by creating an inviting "cafe" setting using art supplies, flowers, candles, etc.
Part One
First we hold empathy circles in groups of 4 in which participants dialog with each other using active listening. Participants are guided through the steps of intention, self-connection, empathic listening, mirrored motions and closing.
Part Two
We work through the Empathic Design process (aka. human-centered design or design thinking), doing one full iteration (cycle) of the process.
EMPATHY
Participants interview each other on the design challenge. For example:
How might we redesign the empathy circle to better address your partners needs?
DEFINE
Defining problems and needs.
IDEATE
Brainstorm many solutions.
Prototype
Designing tangible prototypes that address the needs.
TEST
Check how your prototype works to address your partners needs.
Sharing Our Prototypes With the Group
