Outline
In the first hour of this workshop, we take part in and experience an empathy circle. Then for the next 2 hours, we redesign the empathy circle using the empathic design process.
Empathy Circle (1 hour)
Goal: Introduce and familiarize participants with the Empathy Circle practice for learning and deepening empathy. We do about one hour of empathic listening. See How-To Host an Empathy Circle and become familiar with this listening process. Here is a Printable PDF: How-To Do Empathic Listening.
Mini Empathic Design (2 hour)
Goal: Introduce, familiarize and practice the Empathic Design process though participation.
This is the basic introduction to empathic design (human-centered design) and is based on the Stanford d.school introductory Crash Course in Design Thinking.
No prior knowledge is necessary.
We will do one full iteration of the design process using this workbook.
We will be learning and practicing the empathic design process, (also called human-centered design or design thinking)
We will use design to develop tools to redesign the circle process to be more effective in developing personal, relational and cultural empathy.
We have a variety of design challenges. Such as: How might we design tools to foster and practice empathy? How might we design empathy based solutions to American gun violence? How might we make empathy circles fun and engaging for high school students? How might we design empathy circles for families? etc, etc.
Steps for taking part in the workshop.
