moral agents
HUMANS VERSUS OTHER ANIMAL SPECIES
Human beings are much more capable of learning new behaviors than other animals. We are much smarter than any other animal species when we compare:
technical ability to use and create tools: we are the most technological species.
communicative ability to use and invent languages: we are the most communicative species.
social capacity to group and cooperate: we are the most social species.
These three capabilities reinforce each other :
Collaboration allows us to invent and use new tools, and we collaborate because we can communicate in more complex ways than any other animal. One of the goals we seek with our inventions and technologies is to facilitate and expand communication.
Therefore, technology, communication and social collaboration form a virtuous circle in which advances in each of them drive new advances in the other two.
culture
Different among people of different places and epochs.
It is transmitted by imitation and learning.
Changes with time, between generations.
It is the result of human creativity.
Nature
It is the same among all members of the same specie.
It is transmitted by genetic inheritance.
It remains the same from generation to generation.
It is the result of biological mechanisms.
None of these three capacities could not be developed without certain characteristics that we have from birth, by nature :
Hands-free to manipulate objects, big brain to invent tools.
Instinct to learn to speak a language , a key element of rich communication.
Premature birth , a need for protection for many years that requires the prolonged collaboration of the family.
But although our capacities depend on our nature, the development of these capacities does not follow the same plan in all human beings. Different human groups share the same nature , they are all members of the same species, and yet they are distinguished from each other by having different cultures :
Different technical development : different tools for different problems, different degree of scientific and technological development.
Different languages : currently around 5,000 different languages are spoken around the world. Different forms of communication.
Different social organization : from small tribes and villages to countries with a billion inhabitants. Different customs and ways of organizing and cooperating.
We call "culture" the sum of the results in technology, communication and social organization:
Technical development + Communication development + Social development = CULTURE
In summary...
Human beings are the species in which culture plays a much more important role than instinct.
Human beings are the species that most depends on their own creativity to survive.
Human beings depend on our collaborative intelligence to survive.
Human beings have to organize our lives , we depend on our intelligence and not on instincts.
Human beings are free to organize our lives within certain margins, avoiding what we do not want and trying to achieve our goals.

MORAL AGENTS
Human beings are moral agents , when:
We have intact our intellectual capacities : knowledge, reasoning, foresight.
We enjoy freedom of choice and action.
We are aware of our existence, we know that we exist (and that one day we will die).
As such moral agents:
We have a moral conscience , knowledge of our obligations to other people.
We are responsible for what we do, and we can deserve admiration or reproach for it.
Exercise
What are the characteristics and responsibilities of a moral agent?
Are all people, all human beings, moral agents?
In what situations can a moral agent cease to be?
Is a company a moral agent?
Is a dog or a bird a moral agent?
And a robot or artificial intelligence?
HUMAN DIGNITY
Human dignity is what makes humans intrisically valuable. Other beings and things also have value, but we give them their value: because they are or can be useful to us, because we like them or amuse us, or for other reasons. But its value depends on us: if we change or disappear, its value also disappears.
However, people have an independent and intrinsic value. And for this we deserve special respect, we are worthy of respect .
Why are human beings especially valuable?
Because we can reason and thus differentiate the good from the bad, the correct from the incorrect.
Because we can direct our actions and modulate our feelings.
Because we are free beings .
Because we are moral agents ; we have a moral conscience that encourages us to act in a certain way.

What connection is there between the story that "The Butterfly Circus" tells and human dignity?
What do you think circuses represent like the one in which Will performs before leaving with Méndez?
And what do you think the butterfly circus represents?
What do you think Will's character represents? And the character of Méndez?
7. Explica qué es "ser previsible". ¿Somos libres cuando somos previsibles? ¿O somos libres cuando somos imprevisibles?
8. Hablando en general, ¿Somos previsibles o imprevisibles? Razona tu respuesta.
