Dear Parents
Today your child’s End of Year Progress Report was emailed to you. Please read through it carefully and see how your child is progressing against the expectations for the end of the school year.
In Kindergarten, the Progress Report lists the expectations for each of the following development areas – Social and Emotional, Language, Mathematics, Bible, Motor Skills and Chinese Language.
You will see there are sub-categories and expectations for each area. These are based on the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards used by ICS Kindergarten. The children are expected to have met these criteria for each one of the development areas by the end of the school year. The Progress Report will show your child’s development as observed by your child’s teacher in school:
ME - Meeting developmental expectations
AE - Approaching developmental expectations
NE - Not exhibiting developmental expectations
However, each child develops at a different rate across the developmental areas. There will be differences for children born in September or October against children born later in the school year. To attain the “Meeting Expectations” or “ME” a child should be consistently meeting those expectations in school. If your child has any “AE” or “Approaching developmental expectations”, please consider what your teacher has written in the comment or talked to you during Parent Teacher Conferences. For the children who are older, we would expect all expectations to be met. For the younger children it is important to look at where they are still “Approaching Expectations” and the number of areas where your child is not yet meeting the expectations for their grade level. Please help your child over the summer to be ready for the next grade.
If your child is not focusing well at school or at home - practice doing activities at home where they need to concentrate for a short and increasingly longer periods of time.
If they do not listen to instructions - please set an expectation that they follow the instructions for every adult (include Grandparents and domestic helpers in this as well as parents).
Maintain your child’s language skills even though they may receive "ME" and especially for “AE”, please ensure you speak English at home. Usually Receptive Language (understanding and listening) will develop before Expressive (speaking and using grammar correctly).
Children’s mother tongue is important, however for children to learn in English at school, they need to hear and speak English outside of school to ensure sufficient fluency. Please allow your child to continue to hear and speak English during the Summer holidays, otherwise your child may not be ready to restart school in August. Children have a huge ability to absorb language and have more than one first language.
Practicing speaking English with brothers or sisters, or friends when playing together can help to boost your child’s confidence in speaking in English, but conversations with adults are also needed to boost vocabulary and grammar as adults can guide a conversation, ask relevant questions and explain to boost understanding. Keep reading to your child, borrow books from the library and read together, try talking about the books together after reading.
If your child’s counting skills or number recognition skills are not at the level expected - count items at home or when you go out together, recognize numbers (or letters for R2s) when you go out.
If your child’s body strength or coordination is weak – physical activities during the summer will help to strengthen core body muscles, stop using a stroller and allow your child to walk. As with any exercise, the more you exercise, the stronger your muscles become.
If Fine Motor skills are weak – develop shoulder, then arm/elbow then wrist/finger strength so that your child’s arm strength is good. Just grasping a pencil without the remainder of the arm being strong may strain your child’s hands. Weaker hand muscles can lead to a dislike of drawing or writing. Playing with toys that your child needs to grasp (pulling apart lego, squeezing play dough, grasping things) will help develop hand strength.
If your child needs to learn to socialize with others, then arrange play dates with classmates or other children of your child’s age. Playing with older children or with adults is different as older persons tend to give the young child their own way. A peer will say if they don’t agree!
Most importantly, make learning and practice fun. Children learn best when they play.
If you have any concerns or questions about your child’s report, please do not hesitate in contacting your child’s teacher or me.
Blessings
Gillian Wu
Kindergarten Assistant Principal

If a different adult is coming to pick up your child from school, please notify the Kindergarten Office giving us their full name, Hong Kong Identity card number and their telephone number.
All people coming to pick up your child must:
Be on the authorized list on PowerSchool i.e. a parent has given us permission to release their child to that person.
Bring the purple pick-up card (original card, photographs will not be accepted).
In absence of the pick-up card, for persons we do not recognize we will either - check their Hong Kong Identity Card or call the phone number you have given us.
If we are unsure of the identity of the person picking up your child, we will check their identity.
If the person is not listed on PowerSchool, and you have not informed us, we will call parents to confirm.
If your child usually takes the bus home and changes to being picked up from school, please notify us. Please ensure that the person coming to school is on our authorized list. If in doubt, please give us their name
If you change or employ a new Domestic Helper, please remove your previous helper or add a new helper to the pick-up contacts on PowerSchool.
Parents, be empowered and equipped with the knowledge and resources you need to support your child's growth and success. This page provides resources, and we hope to help parents navigate the challenges of parenting and support your child's overall well-being. Make sure to check out our parent page HERE!
If your child is sick, please keep your child at home to rest and recover and notify the school by completing the relevant e-collect form on PowerSchool of:
Your child’s absence / number of days your child is likely to be off school
Your child’s body temperature (please state actual temperature, not just “has a fever”)
Once recovering from a fever (38C or above), please let us know the day and time your child’s fever subsided without medication. If you do not specify a time, we will use the time from your email. We can then specify how soon your child may return to school (48 hours after fever subsided).
Your child’s symptoms (not just “unwell”).
If your child has Chickenpox, Hand Foot and Mouth or other notifiable disease - please send in a doctor’s note confirming diagnosis. We also require a doctor’s note stating that your child is fit to return to school.
Red Eyes—conjunctivitis can be very infectious. If your child has red eyes, please give us a doctor’s note stating that your child is not infectious before they can come to school.
Department of Health requirements state that if a child has a fever (38C or above), or repeated diarrhea they need to stay home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided (without medication).
Even though your child’s fever may have gone, a child may still have a runny nose or bad cough and are not fit to return to school. Please keep them at home to rest.
Please do not send your child to school if they are still taking medication following an illness. The medicine may make your child sleepy and they still need time to recover and rest at home.
If your child has recovered but still has a mild cough (not chesty or coughing up phlegm), they may return to school but should wear a face mask.
