Dear ICS Community,
I’ve been inspired to add another book (probably) to the Headmaster’s reading list! It was actually by watching the film version before reading the story, which is almost unheard of for me. Mrs Seward and I watched the 1987 film Babette’s Feast recently, which neither of us had ever got round to seeing. It turned out to be a powerful and poignant parable of Christian grace: a grace which is extravagant, costly and unearned, being received through faith and gratitude. I’m sure it won’t spoil it for you if you want to watch it as a family film over the Fall break to say a little more about it; the film is in Danish but has subtitles.
In the film, two aging sisters lead a tiny faithful congregation, but one that has become ensnared in a religion of works and law, with bitterness, quarrels and resentment. A mysterious stranger comes among them as a humble servant, whose glorious identity is hidden from them, and lavishes a remarkable feast on these simple souls, reflecting the ‘immeasurable’ grace of God (Eph.1:7-8) which far exceeds all we could ask or imagine. By partaking in the gift of grace, its power to transform and heal is shown in confession, forgiveness, and the rediscovery of the joy of their faith.
At ICS we trust in Jesus Christ, who came among us as a servant king, and who lavishes an extravagant grace upon us, which we do not deserve; I think of teaching my 7th graders about the Wedding at Cana recently, and the glorious riches of gallon upon gallon of the finest wine! The film was a reminder to me that we are not just saved from something (sin), but also for something (the joy of fellowship in community). As you enjoy your mooncakes and family reunions this Mid-Autumn Festival, why not enjoy this film as a way of rejoicing in what the Gospel means for joy and reunion that will last eternally?
Blessings to you all
Nick Seward

❓What is Seasonal Influenza❓
Seasonal influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is common in Hong Kong, typically peaking in January-March and July-August. While most healthy people recover without issues, it can cause serious illness, especially in young children.
👀 Key Symptoms to Watch For 👀
Fever (>37.8C)
Cough
Sore throat
Runny nose
Muscle or joint pain
Fatigue and headaches
Some children may also experience vomiting and diarrhoea
🫱 How it Spreads 🫲
Influenza viruses spread mainly through droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. It can also be spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth.
🛑 Prevention is the Best Protection: Vaccination is the Most Effective Step🛑
The seasonal influenza vaccine is safe and effective. The CHP recommends vaccination for all persons aged 6 months or above. It is the best way to protect your child and our community from serious complications
Due to increased seasonal influenza activity, we are implementing the following health measures across the entire Shek Mun campus to protect our community:
Check the temperature at home daily. Students & Staff with a fever (37.5°C ear or 37.8°C forehead) must stay home.
Temperatures will be checked again upon school arrival. Students & Staff with a fever will be sent home
