Dear ICS Community,
In 1995, the Hubble Space Telescope team pointed the instrument at a patch of sky that seemed empty over a period of about ten days of exposure. In doing so, they gathered faint light that revealed thousands of previously unseen galaxies, now known as the Hubble Deep Field (NASA). Discoveries like this elicit two different reactions, illustrating a key difference between a Christian approach to education and a secular one.
I appreciate watching and reading Neil deGrasse Tyson, the well-known astrophysicist who has stepped into the public role once held by the late astronomer Carl Sagan. Yet we differ fundamentally in our understanding of the meaning of the universe. In Tyson’s view, before the beginning, astrophysicists have no certain idea what was going on. In his popular book on the topic, he jokes about how some people suggest God as the prime mover of all reality, while others speculate about an eternal multiverse, a universe from nothing, or even a cosmic simulation, “philosophically fun ideas,” he says, that ultimately satisfy few (Tyson 2017).
Now note the contrast in biblical scholar Derek Kidner’s reflection on Genesis 1. The creation account, he argues, stands as a bulwark against nihilism, presenting humanity as God’s image and regent and framing the grandeur of creation as a curtain-raiser to the human story God unfolds. In an age of overwhelming scientific statistics that can seem to reduce our significance to the vanishing point, Scripture reorients us to, “Stand here, on this earth and in this present, to get the meaning of the whole. See this world as my gift and charge to you …” (Kidner 1967).
My daughter loves to look at the sky and, since she could speak, would point to the moon, stars, a sunset, or a rainbow and say, “God made that for us.” There is more wisdom in that simple confession than in all the speculation about how a complex universe could arise from nothing.
Everything we study in the telescope “declares the glory of God” (Ps 19:1), and everything we examine in the microscope reminds us that even the hairs of our head are numbered (Matt 10:30). At ICS, we pursue academic excellence for the sake of virtue, as image bearers who reflect our Creator’s glory in worship and obedience.

Mooncake Madness 2025
The ICS Service Advocates Club is inviting everyone to participate in the upcoming mid autumn drive - Mooncake Madness 2025!
Dates: From now until Tuesday, Sep 23, 2025
Collection Location: Carpark
Last year, an estimated 3.2 million pieces of mooncakes were wasted in Hong Kong. The event aims to help the ‘Feeding Hong Kong’ organization (which is the organisation hosting this event) reduce mooncake waste while sharing them with Hong Kong’s vulnerable communities at this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival.
So if anyone has a lot of mooncakes at home, please feel free to donate them so that we can spread the Mid-Autumn Festival joy this year. The organization will then distribute the donated mooncakes with frontline charities before the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Guidelines for Donating Surplus Mooncakes:
1. Non-perishable and able to be stored at room temperature
2. In original, unopened packaging
3. With a clearly stated best before or use by date and manufacturer
❓What is Seasonal Influenza❓
Seasonal influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It is common in Hong Kong, typically peaking in January-March and July-August. While most healthy people recover without issues, it can cause serious illness, especially in young children.
👀 Key Symptoms to Watch For 👀
Fever (>37.8C)
Cough
Sore throat
Runny nose
Muscle or joint pain
Fatigue and headaches
Some children may also experience vomiting and diarrhoea.
🫱 How it Spreads 🫲
Influenza viruses spread mainly through droplets when an infected person coughs,
sneezes, or talks. It can also be spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touchingthe eyes, nose, or mouth.
🛑 Prevention is the Best Protection: Vaccination is the Most Effective Step🛑
The seasonal influenza vaccine is safe and effective. The CHP recommends vaccination for all persons aged 6 months or above. It is the best way to protect your child and our community from seriouscomplications.
We strongly encourage you to consider this opportunity for your child to get vaccinated at school.
