Starting a new school is a big step in any child’s life. The familiarity of home is replaced by a new building, new people (teachers, the principal, and other children) and new routines. The majority of our new R1s are settling in very well. The children are getting familiar with the routines of changing shoes, learning when it is playground time and when it is snack time. Children flourish and feel safe and secure with regular routines, so we keep Kindergarten routines the same every day. As a result of this familiarity (same teacher, same room and even the same cubby and very similar schedule), our R2s are back into their routines and were ready to learn from day 1. They are even showing R1s how to line up!
For parents of children who are still reluctant to come into school, separation anxiety is normal at this age. It will take time for your child to adjust to school and feel safe and secure coming in. We have noticed a lot of progress over the last week. For parents it is hard to see your child crying at the door. However, what you don’t see is that most of the children have stopped crying by the time they get to their cubby and see their teacher assistant.
Here are a few suggestions:
Keep the drop off routine consistent as regular routines help
Keep goodbyes short – say goodbye or hug, and then walk away as soon as your child is in school
If your child is crying, children tend to settle more quickly once their parent is out of sight
Please do not watch by the open door or wave through the window as seeing parents can prolong or start crying
Please make sure your child has had enough sleep – tiredness can make the school drop-off harder. We also understand that children maybe adapting to no afternoon nap and may be tired.
We completely understand that parents don’t want their child to cry, we don’t either. However, once inside school all children are starting to settle and we are seeing improvements on a daily basis.
Next Friday evening August 22, we will be holding our Kindergarten Back To School Night. The school leadership and teachers will be sharing with you about the curriculum and how children learn in Kindergarten, classroom routines and schedules, expectations for behavior and how we can partner together with you for the education of your child. You may also sign up to volunteer.
Morning class parents - please arrive at 6:40pm ready for a 6:45pm start.
Afternoon class parents - please arrive at 7:15pm ready for a 7:20pm start.
Light refreshments will be served. We will have an introductory talk in the Multi-Purpose Room (MPR) followed by classroom talks. Please note that this is an evening for parents only, please don't bring your child. The evening will last just over one hour.
Blessings

If you have a new Domestic Helper, a different Grandparent or different adult is coming to pick up your child from school, please notify the Kindergarten Office giving us their full name, Hong Kong Identity card number and their telephone number.
All people coming to pick up your child must:
Be on the authorized list i.e. a parent has given us permission to release their child to that person
Bring the green pick-up card (original card, photographs will not be accepted)
In absence of the pick-up card, for persons we do not recognize we will either - check their Hong Kong Identity Card or call the phone number you have given us
If we are unsure of the identity of the person picking up your child, we will check their identity
If the person is not listed in our records, then we will call parents
If your child usually takes the bus home and changes to being picked up from school, please notify us. Please ensure that the person coming to school is on our authorized list. If in doubt, please give us their name
If you change or employ a new Domestic Helper, please notify us to remove your previous helper or add a new helper to the authorized pick up list.
Thank you
Valuable Items
Octopus cards/money should not be brought to school (including putting them in school bags) as these are valuable items and could be taken out and lost.
Watches and / or Jewelry
Watches, necklaces, bracelets or rings should not be worn to school as these often distract the children and their friends. Sometimes the children will take them off and lose them.
Please also do not wear large headbands or large bows as this can distract others during lesson times.
Other items, such as toys, should not be brought to school unless requested by the teacher.
If your child is sick, please keep your child at home to rest and recover and notify the Kindergarten Office (by phone or email) of:
Your child’s absence / number of days your child is likely to be off school
Your child’s body temperature (please state actual temperature, not just “has a fever”)
Once recovering from a fever (38C or above), please let us know the day and time your child’s fever subsided without medication. If you do not specify a time, we will use the time from your email. We can then specify how soon your child may return to school (48 hours after fever subsided).
Your child’s symptoms (not just “unwell”).
If your child has Chickenpox, Hand Foot and Mouth or other notifiable disease - please send in a doctor’s note confirming diagnosis. We also require a doctor’s note stating that your child is fit to return to school.
Red Eyes—conjunctivitis can be very infectious. If your child has red eyes, please give us a doctor’s note stating that your child is not infectious before they can come to school.
Department of Health requirements state that if a child has a fever (38C or above), or repeated diarrhea they need to stay home for at least 48 hours after the symptoms have subsided (without medication).
Even though your child’s fever may have gone, a child may still have a runny nose or bad cough and are not fit to return to school. Please keep them at home to rest.
Please do not send your child to school if they are still taking medication following an illness. The medicine may make your child sleepy and they still need time to recover and rest at home.
If your child has recovered but still has a mild cough (not chesty or coughing up phlegm), they may return to school but should wear a face mask.
