Dear Elementary School Parents,
In the library realm, November is celebrated as “Know-vember,” an initiative designed to encourage students to read non-fiction books. This event lasts all month and challenges school libraries, homerooms, and families to engage students in exploring factual topics that help teach about the world around them.
It is often comical to me how many students assume non-fiction texts are boring. Not surprisingly, I heard many groans and moans when I began the non-fiction library lessons this week! Students are so enamored with the magic of make-believe stories, colorful images, eccentric and silly characters, etc. that it is hard for them to realize true texts can be just as incredible, intriguing, and exciting. Regardless of the topic, the non-fiction books in our school library not only help students understand the world they are living in, but also aid in developing a deeper appreciation for God’s creation and the wisdom He gave us to comprehend such things.
As the ES librarian, I want to share a few positive impacts reading non-fiction can have on our students:
Enhancing knowledge and understanding: students have a variety of non-fiction topics to learn about, from history and science to biographies and culture. This is a prime way to build up foundational knowledge that can be retrieved throughout their academic years.
Building critical thinking skills: in contrast to reading fiction, which is driven by an imaginative narrative, nonfiction teaches readers to identify facts from opinions, understand cause and effect, and build connections.
Establishing empathy and awareness: non-fiction books are often about real people, cultures, and events so they can help students learn about different perspectives and experiences from around the world. Through these true stories, students can further develop love and compassion like Christ had for us, so they can show these traits to others.
Connecting learning with faith: reading non-fiction through a biblical worldview lens helps students connect their academic world with spiritual beliefs. Specifically, students can learn so much about God and His character and the world He created for us by reading further about the things they see with their own eyes each day.
Throughout the month of November, in addition to current checkout parameters, students will be required to check out non-fiction texts from the library. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the following activities:
“Fact of the Day” display: students will learn an interesting (and possibly entertaining!) fact each school day
Non-fiction book tasting: During the first November library session, students will enjoy a book tasting of different non-fiction genres
Knowvember Knowledge Quest: a simple reading challenge specifically for nonfiction books (more information to come).
As educators and parents, encouraging our students to read non-fiction books is an investment in their academic and spiritual growth. It is my hope that through this special celebration, students will develop an appreciation for and be enthusiastic about reading non-fiction! By learning about the world God created, students can increase curiosity, critical thinking, and empathy, furthering the development of lifelong learning.
Parents, please look forward to additional information about “Knowvember” in next week’s edition of the Weekly Warrior!
Blessings,
Mrs. Sydney Silber

Congratulations to John Paul Cheung, Samuel Ng and Hiu Yin Kung for winning the Duolingo competition! After all their effort and dedication during the fall break to complete this challenge, the three of them were able to demonstrate their amazing skills in Spanish and succeed in it!
While the rest of us are tormented by reminders for missed language lessons, these winners have been grinding non-stop to earn the owl’s favour. Receiving a well deserved prize, their excellence is a testament to their dedication. Once again, amazing job and congratulations to the three of them!
Dear Parents,
It is a pleasure to invite you to participate in this year's family time in the ES Library! Every Tuesday and Thursday, "Books & Bonding" will be an opportunity for you to spend quality time with your child/ren by diving into the wonderful world of literacy together! Come explore the elementary library, search for exciting books, read together on our cozy cushions, or complete the engaging table activities. This is a fantastic opportunity to share in the joy of reading and writing as a family.
All students are required to have an adult attend the session, except for those students with a self-dismissal card. To ensure a meaningful experience, we kindly ask adults to refrain from using cell phones and conversing with each other during this time. Your undivided attention to your child/ren will make it all the more special!
The sign-up link for every session in a given month can be found on the ICS Parent Portal under ICS Event Tickets. The sign-ups for September are posted now. Sign-ups for each week are due every Monday at 11:59am, no matter if you are signing up for the Tuesday or Thursday session that week. Please note the specific date you would like to sign up for and know you are welcome to join one or both sessions each week.
If you have any questions, please email Mrs. Silber at silbers@ics.edu.hk.
We look forward to seeing you and your child/children in the library!
Last year we launched our new parent resource page! We want parents to feel empowered and equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to support their child's growth and success. This page provides resources, and we hope to help parents navigate the challenges of parenting and support your child's overall well-being. Make sure to check out our new parent page HERE!
