Life in the Middle
Dear Middle School Parents & Students,
As the Spiritual Life Coordinator at ICS, I get the privilege of working on a lot of the amazing programs we get to run as a school. I get to go to all of the chapels, coordinate the many camps and retreats, support Community Worship Night and organize our Roots discipleship program for grades 7-12. There are many different principles that influence how I approach my job, but two important ones are; 1. Discipleship isn’t an event, and 2. God shows up when we create time and space for Him. These principles can stand in opposition to one another, but looking at Jesus’ life reveals how He was able to fulfill both of them and points us towards ways that we can too.
My calendar of events is so full, it’s easy to fall into the belief that God needs these scheduled and carefully planned events to reach into the hearts of our students. And indeed, God has revealed Himself to our students in incredible ways at some of these events! But Jesus clearly demonstrated through His life that discipleship doesn’t require an event planner. He was never inviting people to an event, but into a relationship. No matter who He encountered, Jesus took every opportunity to point people to His Heavenly Father.
But Jesus also frequently stepped away from the crowds. Jesus was intentional about creating time and space to pray, meditate, fast and simply spend time with His Father. These times were in the wilderness, the desert, the garden, the peace of morning, places where the busyness of life and ministry could be set aside to connect with the very source of Life. Jesus’ rhythm of engaging in spiritual disciplines before and after engaging in ministry provides a model that we are trying to follow and teach at ICS.
While my job often is driven by one of these two principles, our Roots Group program is one of the rare places where time, space and discipleship work in tandem. Roots does have a couple of events where we are intentional about creating time and space (Roots Launch on Sept 19 - look for permission slips sent home today, and the Grade 8 Roots Event in May), and these can be powerful moments for God’s voice to be heard by turning down the din of everyday life. But discipleship is an ‘every encounter’ activity, and the regular meetings on Friday afternoons help build small group communities that welcome heart conversations in classrooms, hallways, WWW trips, sidelines and the cafeteria.
As existing groups reunite and new groups get started, please join me in praying for the 89 grade 7 & 8 students plus 11 teachers who are stepping into a year of building relationships with one another and, most importantly, with the Father.

Parents, be empowered and equipped with the knowledge and resources you need to support your child's growth and success. This page provides resources, and we hope to help parents navigate the challenges of parenting and support your child's overall well-being.
As we start another academic year, please remember that you have been created to have value: you are loved, and you have the capacity to do good things.
And if you ever feel like your step is faltering, or you're unsure, please reach out to me, Mrs. M, MS counselor at ICS.
My full name is Vanessa Manchester-Morgenheim, but everyone calls me Mrs. M. I am looking forward to working with MS students and parents in the coming year so that each student may find academic success and the peace that comes with identity in Christ.
Please click here to see the MS Counselling Resources, see a review of the services provided last year here, and go to www.tiny.cc/seemrsm if you would like to schedule a meeting.
I am praying for you to have a good year, and to see the work of the Lord in the things you experience.
