Thanksgiving and Perseverance
Many cultures and countries around the world observe days of thanksgiving. Often these holidays were celebrated in connection with harvest, because families would have enough food to survive a winter. Many of us in Hong Kong and around the world have our basic needs met, so Thanksgiving celebrations tend to go beyond basic needs to gratitude for family and friends, good fortune, and, as Christians, we lift our thankful hearts upward to God for his indescribable gift of surpassing grace through Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 9:10-15).
He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! 1 Corinthians 9:10-11,15 (NIV)
Sometimes, when we have things so good, we can be tempted to complain when things are inconvenient or don’t go the way that we had hoped. The scriptures encourage us to give thanks in all circumstances. This is not an invitation to wishful thinking or unrealistic positive thinking. It does, however, encourage us to look beyond our circumstances.
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
A couple of things happened this week at school that highlighted this for me. First were our Lower and Upper Elementary chapels this week. Where Class 2C helped us to see that even those things that seem ugly and like cockroaches, mosquitos, slugs and houseflies serve an important purpose in the world. They provide nourishment for other animals and serve as decomposers, so the world does not fill with death and decay. The children were so adorable as they acted this out, but the message was also powerful. Class 3D also shared on the theme of thanksgiving, acting out scenarios where gratitude and thanksgiving might not be our natural response.
The other place that I was able to see the power of a positive and thankful mindset was with our U12 boys basketball team this week. This year we are made up of a majority of 5th-grade players. They are a talented bunch, but we got off to a slow start with two very bad losses. This could have been discouraging for the boys, but they continued to come to practice with a good attitude and play through. They didn’t blame each other or point out each other’s failures. We just worked on what we could: fundamental ball handling, ball movement, and of course, trying to create scoring opportunities. We went to HKIS this week, and the boys played amazingly well, led by our Middle School boys. We lost by 7 points, but we scored 39 points and controlled the ball well. I was so proud of these boys for their determination to improve and play together with heart.
There is power in maintaining a grateful heart, as well as perseverance and a growth mindset amid challenges. We call that “grit” - passion and perseverance over time, and a grateful heart can be a powerful weapon in informing our perspectives as we face the challenges of life. This is one of those life lessons that ICS hopes to instill in our students so that they become resilient in the face of challenges.
Blessings,

A Reminder on School Outerwear
With the temperature fluctuating, we all want to make sure that our children are sufficiently warm. Please be reminded that students must wear school uniform outerwear (sweatshirts, hoodies, fleece vests/jackets & and shells) at school.
Please also be sure that your child’s name is written on their uniform outerwear so that it can be returned to them if left behind.
The Elementary School has a provision in the handbook for cold-weather days (12 degrees or below) where students may wear their cold-weather parkas from home. In the classroom, however, students must wear the uniform and uniform outerwear.
Whenever we make a change to the calendar it will appear on the Elementary School Google Calendar. Parents can view the Elementary Google Calendar from the school's website. On the My ICS page, simply scroll down to the calendars, find the Elementary School calendar, and click the Google Calendar icon on the bottom right of the calendar.

For years, it has been a cherished ICS tradition for families to order poinsettias that transform our theatre into a festive wonderland for the Christmas concerts.
These stunning plants (priced from $45-$80) do more than just decorate our stage; they are a living testament to our joy as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. By participating, you are directly helping to create a joyful and worshipful atmosphere for our students and the entire community.
Your poinsettia plays three important roles:
It Decorates Our Theatre: Your poinsettia will be placed at the front of the stage, creating a beautiful and festive frame for our performers and spreading joy throughout the concerts.
It Comes Home with You: After the final concert on Dec 18, you can collect your poinsettia from the JLL security office (8 am - 5 pm) to enjoy at home.
It Spreads Love: If you prefer not to collect it, we will donate your poinsettia to an NGO in the Shatin area, sharing the love of the season with the wider community.
This is a simple and meaningful way to contribute. The cost will be conveniently charged to your school bill next month. We are in the final days to place our order. Let’s come together to fill our theatre with the spirit of Christmas.
📅 December 5, 2025 at 2pm at Theatre
Our Pre‑Grade 1 students will open the concert with three joyful Christmas songs celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.
Our Cherub Choir will present a musical performance of The Gingerbread Man — the story of a little cookie who longs for freedom and sets off on an adventure. Will he discover what true freedom really means?
Following that, our Children’s Choir will perform three festive songs to share the spirit of Christmas, and more than 80 Grade 4 students will unite their voices to deliver a memorable grand finale performance!
Parents of Pre‑Grade 1, Cherub Choir, and Children’s Choir performers are invited to reserve their tickets through the ICS Portal (ICS Event Tickets). Each family may reserve two tickets. If you are unable to attend in person, you are welcome to join us via the ICS Portal – Theater Live Stream. We look forward to celebrating this special season of joy and music with you!
Let's fill a shoebox with gifts that provide help and happiness to a child in this holiday season.
Hygiene Items: e.g. toothpaste, soap, a small towel
School Supplies: New supplies like crayons or a notebook
1 WOW Item! Something special that brings joy
Please bring your donated shoeboxes to the Service Learning Office (Room 204) between Nov 17 and Dec 5.
Last year we launched our new parent resource page! We want parents to feel empowered and equipped with the knowledge and resources they need to support their child's growth and success. This page provides resources, and we hope to help parents navigate the challenges of parenting and support your child's overall well-being. Make sure to check out our new parent page HERE!
