Dear Parents,
Our Spring 2026 Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) testing is officially complete, and we are thrilled to share the results with you.
To fully understand a student's academic journey, we have to look at two different, but equally important, lenses: Achievement Data and Growth Data.
Think of it like tracking an athlete: achievement tells you their current speed, while growth tells you how much faster they’ve gotten since last season. Together, they give us the complete picture of a student's progress.
Achievement data measures a student’s current performance level at a specific point in time against a set standard or benchmark. It answers the question: "What does the student know and what can they do right now?"
The Analogy: Measuring a child's current height in centimeters.
Why it matters: It lets us know how a student is performing compared to their peers at ICS (District Norm), regionally or globally.
Growth data measures academic progress over time, regardless of where the student started. It looks at the trajectory between two or more testing periods (e.g., from Fall to Spring or Spring to Spring) and answers the question: "How much has the student learned and improved?"
The Analogy: Measuring how many centimeters a child grew over the course of a year.
Why it matters: It indicates the effectiveness of teaching and student effort. It recognizes hard work and progress, ensuring that even if a student isn't performing at "grade level" yet, their individual gains may still be celebrated.
Below, I am sharing some graphs to help visualize these results. The achievement results are measured in RIT points, and the grade level mean is taken from the most In addition to ICS results, you will also find results from the NWEA (USA) norms, China averages (which include Hong Kong), and the East Asia Regional Council of Schools (EARCOS) averages.
The first set of bar graphs displays our average RIT scores per grade. As you look at the Math and Reading data for Grades 2–4, you will notice a beautifully consistent, upward slope year after year.
Our students are performing exceptionally well compared to their peers both regionally and globally. This high level of achievement is a testament to the strong foundation built from the start by our wonderful P1 and Grade 1 teachers, as well as the hard work of our Grade 3-5 teachers and students.
While high achievement is wonderful, it actually makes demonstrating "high growth" much more difficult—the higher a student's starting point, the harder it is to stretch those scores even further. That is why this year's growth data is something to be profoundly proud of:
Reading: Our students successfully matched the rigorous standard growth norms, maintaining excellent growth even with their high achievement.
Math: The year-over-year growth this year is remarkable, meeting or outpacing expectations.
An accomplishment like this doesn't happen by accident. These commendable results are the direct result of a year-long focus on high-quality instruction, personalized attention to individual students' learning needs, and our students' dedication.

Please check your parent email account today to view your child’s individualised MAP Student Progress Report to see their personal results. The reports you will receive today will look at achievement from the beginning and end of this school year as well as past years for Grades 3-5, and growth will be measured from Fall to Spring. The report will also include information on how to interpret the results. Enjoy!
Blessings,
