In the newsletter this term I will be sharing some of our thinking around our new vision and today I’ll unpack the second of the trinity of words...Explore.
As a staff we considered what this rich word could mean for us, and we came up with:
Explore
To be curious
To take risks
To have passion
To experiment, discover, play
To make mistakes
To challenge and be challenged
We thought this happens in a number of ways at DPS, through:
Our play and making environment...this is massive
Having a Maker Team (Core Belief Team) who fortnightly explore the CB’s with kids
Our student inquiry learning
Exploring our emotions and behaviour through Circle Time and PRIDE
Our whānau classes/powhiri process and the language weeks we promote
At DPS we aim to provide a rich learning environment, where children are encouraged to have voice and choice in their learning day...to make decisions for themselves...and ‘Explore’ honours this, and gives further direction for us to follow.
How cool is this...Daniella from Kōwhai, during her play learning created this compliment box for the staffroom. The idea? If you feel like a boost...open the lid (pinecone) and pull yourself out a compliment! This creation really shows what we are trying to do here at DPS...help develop young people who are kind, care for others, have great practical skills, creative skills...plus, they take action for others. Daniella’s box was created by her, for others.
Despite the dodgy weather, another great school picnic on Friday. I love the relaxed atmosphere of this annual event...children of all ages playing together, parents catching up, teachers meeting with whānau...all mixed in with a splash in the pool. Charlotte and Karanema got the School Council underway with their first fundraiser, and massive thanks to the FODPS for the water station and to Matt Cornford for bringing along the bouncy castle (let’s hope for decent weather next year!).
Just a reminder that HERO is our main communication tool. All information around school events will be pushed out via the app, and we have used it already this year for Sports info, Wings over Wairarapa info and to push out about the return to COVID Alert Level 2. Please let us know if you are having trouble with HERO and we can help you out.
Back to Level 1 today after a brief return to Alert Level 2! We were happy with how our systems kicked back into play and the response to them by the staff, kids and community. It was great welcoming those parents who wanted to come in with their children...a little extra mahi to collect names and sanitise hands but well worth it. This response isn’t the norm, the majority of schools close their gates to parents but we’ve made the call (in line with all the public health advice) to allow parents into the grounds if they wished. We appreciated the positive feedback about this.
