Your child may have already mentioned this, but DPS is having a PRIDE focus at the moment on the language we use towards each other. We are talking to the children about saying ‘kind things’ to each other and to adults. I’ve spoken over the last little while at celebration time about this and it is great to hear so many of our DPS Kids saying ‘Hello, how are you’ to each other and to adults (we’ve had a few visitors to school comment about how polite our DPS Kids are). However, there has been some use of language that isn’t ideal...and I don’t just mean swearing. I spoke to the school on Friday about how some (and it isn’t many) children are using words to hurt each other, using their mouth as a weapon. This isn’t showing PRIDE and needs to stop.
Over the next few weeks if your child uses ‘words that hurt’ towards others (swearing, name calling, teasing) they will have a written thinking task to complete at school, and we will give you a call to inform you of the choice of words they are using. The language is being dealt with using our normal school systems (loss of golden time, apologies, missing out on time in the playground) so the big difference is us informing you. Our intention is that you can have a discussion at home as well about what words we choose to use, and that going forward better choices are made.
While the above is about the negative stuff...our discussions and focus with the children is about saying kind things...acknowledging each other, giving compliments, making each other feel good with words. As always the amazing Kid President has a great take on it all:
Last chance to get your votes in for the new DPS Board of Trustees. Voting closes at 12 noon tomorrow, votes need to either be handed into school or posted by this time. Voting papers were mailed to you last week. This week a reminder notice came home, alongside the bio’s of the 4 awesome parents standing for election. Have your say in the future direction of our school.
Love a hard work/good news story. Brooke and Mum came to see me Tuesday AM with some amazing news...Brooke is North Island champ for her age in Boxing! Pretty awesome achievement. This comes on the back of a years training, a year of effort and hard work, and year (no doubt) of failures and setbacks...to come away with this great result. Brooke is stoked with what she has achieved
Over the next few weeks Police Constable Julie will be teaching the personal safety programme Keeping Ourselves Safe. The programme is designed by both Police and educators, has been a part of NZ classrooms for over 30 years, and is part of our Health Curriculum. Keeping Ourselves Safe enables children and young people to learn and apply a range of safety skills that they can use when interacting with others. Students will be able to recognise the differences between healthy and unhealthy relationships and deals with child abuse (physical, emotional, sexual, online).
Constable Julie will deliver lessons alongside classroom teachers in Weeks 7, 8 and 9 with each class getting around 8 lessons.
Further information (including all the lesson plans) can be found on the Police website
Listen to our awesome show on Arrow FM 92.7 every Thursday at 10am and repeated on Saturdays at 4pm. Or you can listen to the podcast here - just click on the 'Live Wires' page and there we will be!

Last week on Thursday it was outside day. I am talking about web making. We made the webs after lunch. We had milk before the web making. I started with a diamond. Lucia said she would help me but I nearly ended up helping her. After I made a diamond I started to make stuff inside the diamond. Most people wanted photos but I didn't. I could taste the fresh air. The sun was shining. It was so hot. I could smell the dirt. I could see people, trees and the fence. I could hear people saying “I can't tie knots.” The core beliefs I showed on Thursday were creativity and collaboration.

Last Thursday it was Outdoor day. It was very cold in the morning but hot in the afternoon. When the teacher called us in we had to make a habitat. After we made our habitat room 13 had to make a spider web out of string. When making my web I smelled something stinky I thought it was the compost . It was very very hard. I made two or three. Outdoor day was awesome.

Last Thursday we did out door day and I could also hear laughing and I could hear Daisy and Charlotte laughing. On outdoor day we had buddies. I could smell the compost because me and Pipiana were buddies and we stole some worms and cockroaches. Me and Pipiana could taste air. Do you know why we have air? We have air to breathe and I could hear people say "help me I'm stuck!"
The best part was me and Pipiana showed Respect and it felt exciting and Pipiana was happy.
