During our school Athletics last week I got to chatting with one of our awesome Mums about school, success, growing great kids and the conversations we have with our young people. I loved what this family does, each day before school they discuss kindness, and what they might do for others. At the end of the school day Mum and Dad can then ask about this...who were you kind to today, what did you do? These sorts of discussions are then about the young people we are helping to develop, the great citizens, the community minded people we need for a successful future.
Often afterschool conversations can be brief…”how was school today?”, with the stock-standard reply of “good”. “What did you do at school today?”, “not much”.
The questions we ask often don’t lead to a richer discussion of the awesome things your young people have done across the day...and recently on Twitter I stumbled across this little list that I thought was pretty cool;
1. What did you do that was creative?
2. What did you do that was kind today?
3. What made your teacher smile?
4. What was the hardest thing you had to do today?
5. How did you work with other children today?
6. How did you challenge yourself today?
Great questions that (hopefully) will lead to more than just a one word answer!
Final session for the year and the two groups performed at Te Papa. They spent the day in a final practice and performed at Te Marae at the end of their day. Our students have put in a ton of mahi across the year, they (and the whole group), received massive accolades for their performance. Thanks to Claire and Joe for being a part of the day.
Still buzzing about how amazing this day was at DPS for the kids of the Masterton Cluster. We talk often here at DPS about giving back, about doing things in service to others...and this event is an example of the school giving back to the education sector in Masterton. Half of our kids went off site that day, teacher gave up their classrooms, and those left behind gave up the field, turf and hall to be used by students from other schools for the day. DPS giving back.
The day has also had a real positive impact on others outside of DPS...two examples below (names and faces hidden for privacy). A child emailing their teacher about wanting to lead some learning...this happened the very afternoon of the conference. And another child who has been inspired to lead and teach others as part of their school learning. Awesome work kids!

DPS took a team of 40 to Interschool Athletics. They all qualified at our DPS athletics and had the chance to compete against pupils from other schools in our Masterton cluster! We had some great results for our relay teams too - please note it is the top 4 placed in the short sprints who represent Masterton at the Wellington Regionals (not winning school teams).
A big thanks to Rachel, Eleina and Nicole for being our parent helpers over the day.
