Many thanks for your support of this day last Thursday. This was the largest gathering of primary school educators in my career, a real opportunity for us to come together and hear from some inspirational speakers about ‘what next’ in education.
For Douglas Park the day was very affirming for the direction our school is taking, affirming for our Vision. These leading experts promoted several ideas that we are on track with:
Reshaping reporting to be wider than just academic outcomes...telling the story of the whole child
The power of relationships...know me as a person, grow me as a learner
The idea of helping children develop into citizens...to give back, to have responsibility for yourself and others
The day also provided challenges in each of these areas. Two of the speakers explained that incremental slow change just isn’t going to cut it...schools have been trying slow change for 20 years and as a result are not keeping pace with a rapidly changing world. As always...much for us to consider as a learning organisation.
A great day out in the sun yesterday...and the sun really shone on DPS! We took two teams down to the Rippa Rugby tournament in town, two mixed teams that included a bunch of children who had never played before. These kids were nervous, but man did they step up! After a bunch of pool games and a semi-final for each team...DPS ended playing DPS in the final...both teams making it to the top of their pools! Awesome stuff. Proud of the teams for this and very proud of the way they conducted themselves down there.
Big thanks to Joe, Renae and Hayley for coaching and looking after the children yesterday.
These are being held next week, your chance to engage with your child about the learning that they’ve been doing this term...what they are proud of, new skills learnt...and a chance to chat with the class teacher as well. These days are always fantastic...the children are so excited to be sharing their learning journey with you and I love seeing the PRIDE...from the kids and from the adults...about the progress being made.
The Masterton District Council are in the consultation stage on the new draft Long Term Plan, and they are after your voice! The plan is called 'Stepping Up' because it's about making some big decisions for our future generations. The LTP outlines the mahi that Masterton District Council is planning for the next 10 years and they want to know what our community thinks about the plans.
As a bit of a carrot...the Council are offering a $1000 prize to the school community with the highest percentage of submitters. Pretty awesome prize!
The LTP consultation document is available on the Council website, where your families can make online submissions. We also have copies at our office at 161 Queen Street and Masterton District Library.
The consultation closes at 4pm on Monday 3 May
Douglas Park is governed by an enrolment scheme (a school zone) and we only take out of zone enrolments twice a year. The next intake is for Terms 3 and 4 and the Board have opened up 20 places for out of zone students. Anyone who lives out of zone comes through this process. Even if you have children here already and have a younger sibling to start...if you live out of zone, you have to apply for your child to attend.
Contact the office if you need to put your child/ren down for a possible place. office@douglaspark.school.nz
'Help!' screamed the giraffe. I'm going to fall off. The godzilla might eat me!

One day I was driving and I saw a giraffe in a tree. He was thinking 'I want to be a monkey. I want to be a monkey so I can climb. It's unfair! I want to climb.' It's fun to climb!
Alessandra
Giraffes have long necks and have teeth so they can bite the leaves. They have long legs and can use its mouth to bite the tree and hold on.

One day I went to Jurassic Park and saw a tall, tall giraffe. I went to see it up close and then I saw a big, big, big T-Rex. It made the giraffe fly up the tree and the giraffe felt really, really scared.
Emma P.
Mum, look! A giraffe up a tree. The giraffe said 'yes I am!'
'You can talk?'
'Yes I can!'
'Wow!'
'Can I show you how to climb?'
'Yes!'
Should I think about picking up the person? Hmmmm. No, I will not do that.

We want you to know about the chance to win $1,000 for your school as part of our draft Long-Term Plan (LTP) consultation, open today. This year the plan is called 'Stepping Up' because it's about making some big decisions for our future generations.
The LTP outlines the mahi that Masterton District Council is planning for the next 10 years and we want to know what our community thinks about the plans. We think schools can help.
How Can You Win?
We'd like you to share the consultation with your school community and encourage them to have their say about our plan. Everyone who makes a submission can nominate the school they believe should receive a $1,000 boost. They will also go into the draw to win one of two $500 travel vouchers for themselves.
The LTP consultation document is available on the Council website, where your families can make online submissions. We also have copies at our office at 161 Queen Street and Masterton District Library.
We’re happy to come along and talk to your students and their whanau so if you have a class that’s keen, or a school event that you’d like us to attend, let us know.
What’s in the plan?
The projects in the LTP will change our town in a way that hasn’t been seen for a generation. It includes three Big Decisions:
1. Civic facility We want to know whether our community thinks we should build our new civic facility now or wait until we have confirmed external funding.
2. Masterton revamp We want to know whether our community thinks we should complete our 10-year plan for upgrading the town centre, boosting our welcomes, and developing a Waipoua precinct or scale the project back.
3. More housing for seniors We want to know if our community thinks the Council should build public housing for seniors on land we own, or make the land available for someone else to do it.
If you have any questions or would like to invite us along to any school events, email Barbara Wilson – barbaraw@mstn.govt.nz or call her on 06 370 6300.
The consultation closes at 4pm on Monday 3 May.
We look forward to talking with you soon.
Ngā mihi
