A date for your calendars, Monday of Week 3 (5th August) is a Teacher Only Day so the school is closed. Douglas Park and Fernridge have worked to bring Nathan Wallis to the region, and Nathan is running a session for staff from both schools (and a bunch of others from across the region) during the day. DPS then hosts him in the evening as he runs a Parent Evening...tickets for this are currently sold out, but 50 more will be available in the next few days. Here is the link for info and to purchase tickets.
Nathan is a neuroscience educator and has a passion for helping parents (and teachers) understand how the brain develops from birth, through to the teenage years. For us this is important...what conditions do we need to provide for your children at school to be the best they can be based on developmental science. He is also an expert on childhood anxiety, and the way the brain reacts (and how we act) when in a state of trauma or anxiety.
Nathan is also a believer, and promotes play-based learning as a way to provide an environment that stimulates creativity, develops resilience and allows for learning that is ‘right’ for a child developmentally. At DPS we have embraced play, making and creating as important components of our learning. Children right from 5 are able to exercise choice, to make decisions for themselves, to ask questions, to explore, to experiment and to build relationships with others through their play. As the children grow older within the school this ‘playful thinking’ is kept as something to be valued...and you still see our eldest children engaging in play, making and creating. This article just popped into my Twitter feed, shares the benefits very clearly to a play-based learning approach in schools.

Well done to Ella, making the U13 Wairarapa Development team for Hockey for 2019! A lot of hard work and effort has gone into getting this far, and Ella currently also plays with the U11 squad.
Here is Jaxon and the beginnings of a seat for Baby Bear. Part of the Maker Learning in Room 14 Jaxon took his ideas home and worked with his Dad to make this up. His team have since added legs, and it was getting a striking coat of red paint when I last laid eyes on it.

Next Wednesday, Russell St School head over to DPS to take part in our annual sports exchange. This will happen rain or shine - no postponement date. All of the Kahikatea syndicate take part and play either netball, rugby, hockey, football or miniball.
We compete for the "Tararua Challenge" flag and we currently hold this as we won it when we travelled over to Russell St last year...the host school has never won the flag but that is our goal this year!
They will arrive at DPS just before 10am and we will begin with a pōwhiri and morning tea. Games will be played between 1.30am - 1pm with a shared lunch and prize giving to finish off the day before Russell St head home.
Whānau are more than welcome to come and watch and support our teams...a timetable will be published on the DPS Facebook page next week.
GOOD LUCK KAHIKATEA!
