Wow! A fabulous night in our hall last week, celebrating the start of Matariki with our Cultural Evening. The talent on show this year was amazing...I’m impressed every year by what the children are able to do, but this year I think was very special. Claire opened the night up to some other performances, children had to audition their piece and make the cut, and the end result was great. We had our Choir and Kapahaka...always beautiful and passionate. We had our guitar students, performing as duets. We had dancers, especially cool as some of their performances were created by themselves...creativity in action. We had singers...standing up on stage to sing to a large crowd by yourself takes real bravery. Connor showed his recorder talent, and Reid channeled Green Day for a rockin’ performance on his electric guitar. Spencer and Maceo dazzled the crowd with a magic act (their banter on stage was absolute gold...and like true magicians, they refused to tell me their secrets!). And Penelope blew the crowd away singing and playing her guitar...literally could’ve heard a pin drop in the hall, she really captivated the crowd.
Our kids were confident in themselves, dared to dream by stepping up to perform, showed real creativity in action and their faces when the crowd applauded was worth being there to witness. Can’t wait to see what next year brings!
Another successful round of Learning Conversations were held this week. Thanks for coming out on those cold nights to hear the story of your child's progress this year...both academically, and as a learner. The children were so proud to share their learning, to read some of their writing, show off their creations that they have made and to have their time with you.
If you have any feedback on the learning conversations feel free to send me an email with your thoughts: principal@douglaspark.school.nz
Just a quick update here. Currently Primary School Principals around the country are voting on our next action in negotiating with the Ministry. Letters from schools were delivered on Tuesday to Ministry offices around the country by Principals advising them that we are going to ‘disengage’ with the Ministry…Darren Kerr (Whareama School) was one who went to the Ministry this week. A good article here to describe the action. Actions are being designed to disrupt the Ministry, rather than disrupt schools. There are a small amount of us in the country (1900), so the aim is to make our presence felt.

NZ Police recently launched a new non emergency number, 105. We’ve done this to make it easier to get hold of us in the event of non-urgent situations or ‘Things which have Already Happened’, which don’t require Police assistance immediately.
You can call us on 105 for all non emergencies, or you can go online at 105.police.govt.nz to report things like:
- Lost property
- Theft for a public place or car
- Intentional property damage
- Or to get an update or add info to a previous report
In the event of an emergency, always call 111 - Things that are Happening Now.
Vodafone are proud technology partners of the New Zealand Police, so we’re helping to spread the word about their new 105 number for non-emergencies.
Check out their 105 song, then re-create your own version. Get your colleagues, school, community groups, friends and family involved. You can lip sync, dance or even change up the lyrics.
