As a staff, we had an amazing day over the road at Te Rangimarie Marae. We were welcomed on with a lovely pōwhiri (Claire was our kaikaranga), the first time as a whole staff for many years. Gareth Winter spoke to us, sharing many stories of the wider region, leading to stories around our immediate local area. This was awesome...and he had a particular message about names and the power of them. Many of our local area names (eg. streams) have been lost...so their stories have been lost, along with their mana.
Karen Herbert and Uncle Ronnie (Amy Williams’ whānau) came and spoke to us about the wharenui...Nukutaimemeha. They both lived in the wharenui when it was in Carterton. Their stories brought a real personal touch to the day, and made the place feel like home with their memories shared.
We were then joined by Paul Anderson, Deputy Principal of Lakeview School. Paul came to help us with pepeha...the what, why and how to be confident doing this. Again...he was awesome and so generous with his time and resources. As a staff we then each shared our pepeha inside the wharenui, and were each presented a taonga...a gift to recognise us as members of the DPS whānau.
The day was a very powerful one, very special and a great addition to the story of Douglas Park.
Thank you all once again for your support of these days...they are of massive benefit to us as a staff, and that means great things for the tamariki in our care.
Over the last couple of newsletters I’ve let our community know about some of our DPS staff who won’t be with us for 2021, and across the last month we have been busy advertising, interviewing and appointing for the upcoming school year.
We have made our appointments for 2021 and have a full complement of amazing staff for next year. The new additions to the school bring a lot of strength, passion and experience:
Josh Vergunst: Josh comes to us from Lakeview School where he currently leads their digital work and teaches in the seniors. He will be one of our Year 4-6 team leaders.
Sarah Broughton: Sarah comes to us from Masterton Primary School where she is a team leader, and has led and organised their sports.
Joshua Fielding: Joshua comes to us from Te Horo School, and will be teaching Year 2/3 in Kōwhai
Josephine Pinfold: Josephine will be a beginning teacher with us, completing her study this year
We look forward to welcoming them all onto staff, and to seeing them bring their talents and passions to our Douglas Park classrooms.
Our next step will be working on team structures and then later in the term, constructing the home class and team lists for 2021.
Today we host the 2nd Connect, Inspire, Learn event...a conference for children, run by children. The 2019 event was a massive success and already the 2020 version is exceeding what was achieved 12 months ago. The event is pretty amazing...a real chance for kids across the town to live up to our Core Belief of Learner Agency...taking control of their learning, crafting a presentation and delivering this to their peers.
The Board has opened up places for 25 five year old students for the first half of 2021, Terms 1 & 2. If you live out of zone (even if you have children currently attending) and have a child you’d like to start with us in the first half of next year, please contact the Office, applications are now open.
Also...if you know of parents outside of the zone who would like their 5 year old to attend Douglas Park, please get them to contact the office as well. It happens every time...we complete the ballot process, then the following week people ask if they can attend (and they can’t).
Email the Office on office@douglaspark.school.nz for more information.

Once upon a time I robbed a bank. There was a lot of money and cash. I got away. And there was gold too. Last but not least I was rich. Yay! The End

Once there was a village, a very very happy village. And the village was a village of lots of mice. But one day a…gigantic and humongous… cat came destroying all the houses. The cat was as big as a very very very tall mountain! Super mouse came to the rescue. But…he did not know what to do! Then one little idea popped into his smart head. He punched the cat but it didn’t work! He thought to be kind. He tried that and it worked! The End
