DPS Kid - Good vs Great: Kindness Matters
At Celebration Time last week I spoke about our Rippa team (who did an absolutely unreal job in Wellington), but in particular I spoke about Jared and Azaria. To me, all the kids in the team are awesome, and very talented...but I’m also a firm believer in the difference between Good and Great...and often the difference is character. Jared and Azaria were both incredibly skillful on the field (I think Jared is the fastest kid I’ve seen with a football!), but also humble, play for the team and are kind to others. Jared helped an opponent up after he fell over when ripped...the difference between Good and Great. Azaria never gave up and always looked to her team mates...the difference between Good and Great. Both of them praised their team mates, or told them not to worry after making a mistake...the difference between Good and Great.
The school leaders are currently reading a book called ‘Legacy’, looking at how the All Blacks created a winning culture in the team. The book is amazing, and lots of the messages relate directly to us here at DPS. One that really sticks out is the All Blacks mantra...Better People Make Better All Blacks...in other words, they look at more than just the skill level and talent of a player, they look to see if they are a good person. If they aren’t...they won’t make the cut. The mantra can be changed to suit anything...better people make better chefs, better people make better mechanics, better people make better teachers etc...the focus shouldn’t just be on acquiring skills, but also developing character, becoming a ‘better’ person.
We have had a huge kindness focus at DPS...and kindness does matter. We think often about what our ‘legacy’ will be...and for us that is the DPS Kid. We want children to leave us on the path to being a great citizen of Aotearoa and the world...and a great citizen is much more than someone who can read, write and solve some maths. That stuff is important...but if the child/adult isn’t also kind, empathetic, able to work well with others, have grit, show PRIDE...is it enough just to be literate and numerate? The answer is most definitely no. Better People Make Better Societies.
Grandparents Day
Tomorrow is the big day when we invite our elders into our school, to be with whanau and to meet us. This event was great last year, many interesting stories were told, the children were so excited to have their important person with them and the smiles on our visitors faces as they interacted with the kids and each other were priceless. I’m gutted to be missing tomorrow, but I know the team are going to make it a special time for all involved.
Where am I?
Currently as you read this I am away again from DPS, this time visiting schools in Melbourne. A group of us, all young principals, have headed there to gather more information about where learning is headed next. As I’ve written about, the Board is about to set the plan for the next 3 years and part of my role is making sure we are thinking ahead, how can we best prepare kids for their future (not our past). Visiting leading schools, school being innovative...schools taking risks...all of this helps paint that picture about what DPS could be like in 3 years time.
Rugby!
While rugby isn’t one of our official winter codes at DPS, a heap of DPS Kids play each week for the various clubs. Many of them have done a super job this season and have been recognised. Mrs Mitchell has collected (as best we could) photos and awards for our awesome DPS rugby kids.
If you play another sport, and want us to shout about your child's success...flick us an email and we can get something into the newsletter. office@douglaspark.school.nz
Over the past fortnight many rugby clubs have celebrated the finishing of their seasons with their annual prize-givings. It came to our attention that special mention needed to be given to a number of our DPS Pupils who represented their personal clubs with amazing sportsmanship and pride. These kids celebrated with their families winning various different awards. Way to go guys, we are super proud of you all. Apologies if we have missed anyone. Check out their achievements!
