We’ve been working this year on re-visioning the school, re-setting our direction and thinking about what is most important to us as a learning community. We’ve heard from the staff, the voice of the children and from our parent community.
We’ve come up with a trinity of words that capture what we want as a learning community going forward; Nurture, Explore, Create. These words are rich, cover important parts of our school (like relationships, like play & making) and describe the type of learning we desire as well as the type of young people we look to develop.
Currently the vision statement that captures this is:
Together we Nurture, Explore, and Create a better future
In our work with Mark Osborne to realise this vision, he shared the characteristics of an effective vision with us
Imaginable: Conveys a picture of what the future will look like
Desirable: Appeals to the long-term interests of all who have a stake in the organisation
Feasible: Comprises realistic, attainable goals
Focused: Is clear enough to provide guidance in decision making
Flexible: Is general enough to allow individual initiative and alternative responses in light of changing conditions
Communicable: Is easy to communicate; can be exchanged in the corridor and successfully explained in seconds.
We’d love to hear your feedback on this draft vision...what do you think, does this resonate with you, do you think it meets the criteria above? Flick me any thoughts to: principal@douglaspark.school.nz
We’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback about HERO, about how great it is for information and communication. We’ve also heard of some work on’s, and will pass that information onto the developers. If you haven’t yet got sorted with HERO...this link will take you to a help sheet to get going. More and more of our information is being distributed this way now.
When you log into the app, Community Notices is the first thing you will see. You will only see notices that are relevant to your child/ren. i.e. Class, Team, Year or Sporting Activity. If the text is long, you may need to click read more to view the whole message.
In the top left is the Menu icon (3 lines). When you tap on this you will see your child/ren, and once you tap on them you will see their Learning Conversation 2020 Report from last term (if they had one), and also any posts directly about them. You’ll see in the screenshot that Henry has one post in Rimu about him (this only shows when a post has been made).
Across this term we are trying out the individual post feature, so by the time we have Learning Conversations, your child will have at least one post within HERO about them.
Parents receive ONE form of notification when a Community Notice is published. If they log into the Hero mobile app they will receive an in-app notification. If they log into Hero via a web browser they will receive an email notification.
If you can’t login to the Hero app at any stage due to a technical issue, remember you can also access Hero via this website link: https://our.linc-ed.com/ and please let us know if you require any help or support, we are happy to do so.
A great night for DPS and our budding young photographers last night at MIS! The Annual Wairarapa Photography Competition has been running, and the prizegiving was last night...and DPS really came to the party. The full list of achievements are in the table below, but of the 6 event categories DPS placed 1st in 5 of them! Alessandra, Gerrard, Mia, Lachlan and Reece were these winners, with Jack, Naya, and Micaiah placing in the top 3. A great effort team, and after chatting to your whanau, we know a lot of effort has been put into this success.
That wasn’t the end of it though...Mia also won the overall prize for Architecture for her stunning photo! Super effort.
The quality of the photos from the children of our region was simply stunning...a real step up once again from the past. Can’t wait to see what next year brings!

My Favourite Moment At Camp
By Isabell
When I went to camp my favourite part was the flying fox because it went really fast and it was also really cool because I went over trees. It was two hundred meters long!
I don't know how high it was but I think it was about sixty meters.
My second favorite was kayaking. It was fun paddling. I almost got stuck but I learnt how to turn and go forward. It was freezing. I couldn't even feel my hands so it made it a little harder to paddle but it was really fun!
My Favourite Day At EOTC
by Shekinah
My favourite day was the movie day and Among Us. At the start of the day we played on Among Us and Minecraft. I liked the Among us because we got to join other peoples games. And I liked Mindcraft because you could build with your friends. Then after that we went to the hall where there was a bouncy castle and a badminton game and a bowling game. Me, Pyper, Elyse, and Poppy went on the Bouncy Castle. It was an obstacle course.
We went back to the class room and played some more games. Then we had morning tea.
Then we came back to the class room and got into our PJs. Then we got into our blankets and bean bags. Then we watched a movie. The camp kids came back to school then we said “Hi” to them.
After that we went back to the classroom and finished the movie.
After the movie we packed all of the stuff away and went back home.
The Beach
By Jadyn
I did not go to camp or EOTC I went and spent time with my whānau. There was Liz, Lana, Trida and my mum Rachel so here I am writing about Riversdale Beach. I am writing about my favourite time at the beach.
I had lots of favourites and it was hard to pick from all of them but I have managed to pick some of my favourite activities. I liked roasting the marshmallows and eating the american hot dogs. We all got to watch a movie. The movie was Spies in Disguise. It was funny because the spy gets turned into a pigeon. In the pigeon form he or should I say she was a girl pigeon but in reality he was a man. We all played spotlight around the cabins in the middle of the night after the marshmallows. My mum had to play because the rest of my group was really scared and were joking around alot. Another one of my favourite things was when we all went boogie boarding in the sea. I did not like it when I got sunburn on my shoulder.
Camp Kaitoke
By Julie
My favourite moment at camp was the giant swing.
I went to the very top like the maximum top of the giant swing. When I went up the giant swing group nine, Brookes group was pulling me up the giant swing. I was really, really, really, really, really terrified and was really, really interesting at the top. When I looked down, the people looked so small but when I looked beside me there was a hill, it was so interesting.
I got to pull a rainbow rope so I can swing. I pulled the rainbow rope to my stomach and I let go of the yellow rope that strong amazing group nine, Brookes group was pulling. When I let go of the soaking wet rainbow rope I swinged.
While I was swinging I could feel air coming past me and in me, it was really cold but luckily I had two warm jackets and one rain jacket.
It was so awesome but then Oscar had to try and catch me so I could go off and another person could have an amazing adventure up in the giant swing like me.
THE HAUNTED HOUSE
Made by Bennion Wiser Hapi
Hello! My name is Edward and I will tell you the story of when I went into the HAUNTED HOUSE, now once upon a time....I was walking down the street for my evening walk, when all of a sudden a creepy house appeared out of nowhere! I was a little creeped out but I wanted to see what was in the house, so I looked inside a window and saw nothing, so I peeked in the door and nearly hit my head on the stony ground, inside there was a 1 hour old HUMAN corpse! I jerked back as soon as I saw it and fell over. I decided to explore inside of the house even though I was SUPER creeped out. I entered and an axe came swinging down on my head! I ducked just in time, “woah!” I said, I was more than creeped out by this place, I was scared. Even though I was scared I kept on going and the deeper I got the more booby-traps there were. Once I saw a 200 year old skeleton, it’s the owner's skeleton I thought, maybe even older than 200 I thought again “hmmmm” I said as I side stepped a swinging axe easely “these traps are getting easy to predict” I said. Then inside of the HAUNTED HOUSE a spike trap came out of nowhere and I nearly lost my foot! “WHAT THE HECK!!?”Then I saw a door and entered a room through it. When I did I realised how real this place was. It was all fake! “WHAT!!!??”I shouted “You idiot!!!” then the other dude said “what?” then I said “you freakin tried to kill me!!!” then I saw a grenade. “Grenade!!” I shouted then I realised it wasn't a live grenade (which means it has the pin removed) “oh” I said then I looked back at the man. There was something black crawling on to him “r..u..n…”he croaked to me “what!?” then it hit me (I mean I found out what the black thing was) it was venom! ”that's venom!!!!!!” I screamed “I'm gonna die here!” I screamed, “AAAAAAAAH!! “We are venom, ha ha ha haaa” “eyes, lungs, heart, all the things I am going to eat” then I got eaten by venom. so you're probably wondering how I’m telling you this story when I'm dead, this is how, I’m a ghost!(:
Hard Words explained:
VENOM: a symbiote (alien) from a meteorite that hit earth, there are two kinds of symbiote, carnage, a symbiote that does not change from its host (the person it controls) and venom, a symbiote that if it sees a stronger person, it controls that person, and eats the other one.
Grenade: a military explosive that explodes when you pull the pin on it.
Ghost: a spirit.
Axe: a weapon used by Vikings.
Skeleton: an old dead body.
As you will all be aware, we have the Dental Bus with us for the next couple of weeks. All children have been given a form to return so if haven't seen it, please check your child's bag and return the completed form. Thanks.
All teams are displayed in the sports board outside Rm 4 and all practises will be during lunchtime at DPS
Check out the draws in this folder - we will add them as soon as they are sent to us.
Please note...all pupils who play sport for DPS must wear the DPS sports uniform.
GOOD LUCK DPS TEAMS!
