Our Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future

Recent weather events here and globally have really got me thinking once again about the state of our environment. One in 100 year storms seem to be happening with alarming regularity…6 months of rainfall in 1 day…lakes & rivers drying up overseas…all things we read/see/hear about often in the media and it can lead to a sense of despair, that the problem can be so massive that tackling it as an individual is too daunting. But, there is great hope…the young people we are helping to create these days seem far more aware and caring than I can remember during my own primary schooling.

Something that DPS is aiming for is to become certified CarbonZero, and we’ve made some epic strides in the energy space. We generate a significant amount of power from our solar panels, and store some of the excess in a battery (which covers a lot of the overnight power consumption). We also had LED lighting throughout the whole school, and use heat pumps for heating and cooling.

This week our Enviro Team are doing a Waste Audit for the school…having a look at the type of everyday waste we create, and measuring how much of it we produce. We have good systems around re-using materials, recycling and composting but also acknowledge that this is an area we can improve. Having the children lead this mahi is building awareness and capability…we want our young people to see that they can make a difference, they can work to Create a Better Future.

Netball Success!

Well done to the DPS Magic netball team, and their tireless coach Mr Blue! They’ve had a very strong season, and after a closely fought match they beat Fernridge to win their grade! I came to school the next day and saw Mr Blue wearing his medal…the team had made a deal that they had to wear them the next day in celebration, good on ya guys!

Office & School Disruption

We have a major property project starting soon with the entire Admin Block of the school being remodelled. It has been a slow process to get to this point…we started the work during the first lockdown way back in 2020…but now things will start to happen in a hurry.

What you need to know:

  • The Office will be moving to Room 7 at the end of the term, and it is likely to be there right through into Term 1 of next year. The space is going to be much smaller as Room 7 also has to store some teaching resources, and be available for staff and visitors to use as a meeting room.

  • The medical room will also be in Room 7. If your child is sick and needs to be collected, Room 7 is where they will be found.

  • The hall is going to be compromised as well…as we are going to shift the staffroom there, and use it as a place to store teaching resources.

The disruption will be worth it in the end…but just a heads up as it will be disruptive!

2023 Enrolments

Planning is well underway for 2023 so I’m putting a call out now…have you enrolled your child for 2023? You may have a 4 year old in the house, or a friend with a 4 year old…make sure the office has been contacted so we have you in the system. Our enrollment zone was amended this year, you can read the details in this link…and a map is below. Make contact at office@douglaspark.school.nz . The process for out of zone enrolments for the first half of 2023 will also begin shortly…and again, make sure the office has your details if you wish to be considered for a place at Douglas Park.

Welcome Back Amanda!

With numbers growing in the Rimu team we have another teacher starting next week…and it is Amanda Mitchell. Amanda will be well known to most of you having taught here for over a decade & leading the Kōwhai Team for many years. She is returning from maternity leave, and next week will start the latest class inside Rimu.
