We Want Your Input!

The Board of Trustees are starting their work on the next Strategic Plan for Douglas Park School...the plan that will guide us for the next 3 years. This is your chance to have your say...what are the big picture ideas you have for the school, for learning and for your child? A short survey will come out today, this is the start of the process. Early next term the Board will collate this data, and also look to hold some face-to-face hui as well. We want your voice, we want your ideas and we want your input into how we can make our awesome school even greater.

Survey due back by Thursday Week 10 (next week), a paper copy will come home today and we will also have a digital version that can be completed online, click here to complete. The teaching team with the largest % return will get a prize reward...can you help your child help their team? 5mins max is all it will take, and the school will gain some very valuable, rich information about where to next for DPS.

Keeping Ourselves Safe - Walking to & From School

We have been made aware of an incident involving a child from another school being approached by a stranger and being asked to get into a vehicle. While this hasn’t directly happened to a DPS student, it is a timely chance to remind us all about keeping ourselves safe. Teachers have spoken to classes about keeping themselves safe walking to & from school. Last term Constable Julie ran several weeks of lessons for the school, so the kids are well prepared with strategies. As staff we are making our presence felt in our Hi-Vis on the streets. If children are walking to and from school, please try to have them walk with a buddy, and know their safe route home. Further details have been in the media - please keep safe out there.

Enrolment Scheme (Our Zone)

The Board met this week and have decided to open up 20 places for Out of Zone students in Terms 1 & 2 next year. Information and applications will go out to those on our database, but feel free to let other interested parents know of this opportunity.

EduCamp Wairarapa

The third annual educamp was held in the weekend, and our DPS community should be proud of the great staff we have here at school. An educamp is a kind of conference...but the workshops are run by those who turn up, the timetable is made on the day, and the cost of entry is just a koha. Douglas Park has staff on the organising committee for the event, and once again they put together something special for local educators. Held at Makoura College we had attendees from ECE, Primary, Secondary and also local organisations like Aratoi and the Library. I organised Claire Amos (Principal of Albany Senior High in Auckland) to present a mini-keynote which you can view below...she had some great messages and is worth a watch. DPS staff ran 4 sessions, with Kiri, Sophie, Hannah and Shaun doing a great job sahring knowledge and facilitating conversations. DPS also attended in high numbers...remembering this is in the weekend, in their own time...we had 11 of the teaching team there. This shows the commitment of staff to develop themselves, to being learners and for wanting to do better things for the awesome kids we have here at DPS.

EnviroSchools Trip

Our Enviro team headed to the Waipoua River on Tuesday as part of Conservation Week. DPS has a long history of being ‘green’...the first Enviro award school in the region, first to become a Green Gold Sustainable School and the only school with a SchoolGen Solar power array on the roof (providing around 1/3 of our energy needs). The kids had a blast, and learnt a heap. Photo below of them with Ash...the same water scientist who came to DPS to work alongside our ‘Eel Crew’ in their stream cleanup efforts.

Absences

A gentle reminder about the processes for absences. We are currently 361 students large at DPS and naturally we will have kids away daily for a variety of reasons...holidays, appointments, illness...you name it. It helps us enormously if we are informed about children being away, and why. Once the roll is completed in class at 8.45am, the office work their way through the unexplained absence list...and this list can be quite long. If we know your child is away we don’t need to chase you up. It is easy to let us know...you could:

  • Call us: (06) 370 0189 and push 1 for absences
  • Txt the school cellphone: 021 128 3607
  • Or email us at: office@douglaspark.school.nz

We appreciate you making this small effort to help us be more efficient and safe with absences at school.

ARTS MONTH – SEPTEMBER 2019

A month to give arts and creativity some serious oxygen.

This September the Arts Foundation, with the help of Creative NZ, Chartwell Trust, NZ Post, BJ Ball, Spectrum Print, NZME, Phantom Billstickers and Go Media, are going live and wide throughout New Zealand to create open and safe spaces to share what art is to Aotearoa. It's time to give the arts some much needed oxygen to help grow their understanding and support.

Arts Month aims to bring arts up on the agenda and map out Aotearoa’s own definition of art, while also acknowledging the arts and creativity as a valuable medium for a greater sense of wellbeing and connectedness in our communities.

We’re asking all New Zealanders to express what ‘art is’ to them. A simple question with so many answers – the public are invited to participate in a digital and street-level campaign.

Head to www.artsmonth.co.nz and get creative with the pencil, paintbrush, text, image, or spray-paint icons, then hit "post" to share your definition with the nation. #ArtsMonthNZ
