Our Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future

We have a real belief at this school around service, thinking of others, and the idea of giving back. Important qualities that we want to foster in the children, and qualities that we want to ‘live’ as a school and a community. Lovely example this week…one of our awesome parents, Mark, put us forward in a competition to win some sports gear and a visit from Olympic Bronze Medalist Eliza McCartney…and he won! Mark mentioned he was entering another competition, and saw this one…and chucked our name forward. Especially thoughtful as his lovely wife is a teacher at another school in town!

When we got the news we were understandably thrilled…it isn’t often these sorts of opportunities come along…but that got us thinking about how we could also pay it forward, and we’ve come up with a great scheme. Eliza is going to visit us at DPS…to present our sports gear prize, to meet the kids, and to inspire us by participating in some games….but then we are going to bring her down to the Inter-School Athletics competition so this inspiration can be spread around all the local schools. Service, thinking of others, and giving back…Mark started us off with his actions, and we are looking to live by our words as well. Still in the planning stages but I’m excited to get her inspirational story to school, and to also allow all the local athletic competitors to also get this opportunity.

Tararua Challenge - Russell Street School Sports Exchange

After several years the Tararua Challenge is back on! Last held in 2019 we won that edition, and as this newsletter gets sent out today, the Year 5 and 6 students from Kahikatea and Rātā are competing to hold onto the coveted flag. The kids have been working towards this for weeks, lots of practice and effort going into being ready for the big day. For some…this is a continuation of the sport playing that they love and enjoy. For others, they are daring to dream to play a code that they haven’t played before…or even play a team sport for the first time. I hope we go well…play hard, play to win, and win or lose…we play with PRIDE!

Girls Rippa Rugby

Big week for sport as we also fielded a team in a regional girls rippa rugby competition. Held down in Carterton, our girls represented the school well. Having minimal practice time, they pulled together under coach Joe and got a couple of wins on the day. A first for some, but all members of the team played well. Thanks to Joe, Hannah and our parent helpers for being with the team.

Please find information below about our cycling event for preschool, primary and intermediate aged kids.

iBike has been run by the Manawatu Mountain Bike since 2006, and over that time thousands of kids have had fun riding their bikes at our event. At our last event in 2019 we had over 500 entrants from around the region. This year we have shifted the event from our traditional May timing to early November to take advantage of better weather.
