Douglas Park School is a Green-Gold Sustainable School. We were the first in the Wairarapa many, many years ago…and at the end of last year we had our status renewed again. Last year we went through a Carbon audit, and ended up with CarbonZero status. We have two solar panel arrays, we compost on-site, have worm farms and have restored the stream behind the pool. The environment means a lot to us…and it ties into our Vision. We want our children to make a difference, to make a Better Future…part of that is doing good things for the world around us.
In that vein, we have recently begun a new project, partnering with the Friends of Solway Reserve. Our councillors have been to Norfolk Nursery to learn about plant propagating, and last week they went to Solway Reserve and helped plant 40 trees. These are the first steps in a reciprocal project where we get to help out, and our children get the benefit of being part of a long term, large project. We got some lovely feedback from the Friends of Solway Reserve, and we can all be proud of how well the councillors represented our school with PRIDE.
The team at Friends of Solway Reserve wanted to write to applaud your school and your students.
Over the last few weeks, we have been fortunate to have your students join us on our planting project. 10 students joined us at Norfolk Road Nursery, and another 20 students joined us for a native planting-bee on site at the Reserve.
We were grateful for the opportunity to partner with such an exuberant group, and were taken back by the maturity, mana, and enthusiasm the students showed.
As an older generation in Masterton, we are privileged to have these young people taking ownership and practising kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga in our community at such a high level. They certainly did your school proud.
Please will you convey our thanks to your students, and also the staff team at Douglas Park School. You should be proud of the future leaders you are raising – we certainly are.
And we look forward to our on-going connection with your school students and staff.

Speaking of Service and giving back…we have another of our Service Days tomorrow, our chance to give back to others, to our community. One of the drivers of what we do at school is the idea of developing great young humans, who will grow into great citizens. We want children to believe that it is normal to give back, to help others, to contribute to a larger project…all without expecting something in return. Doing it for the satisfaction of knowing ‘I helped someone today’.
Last year TVNZ came and made a ‘Good Sorts’ clip about us…and as we head into another Service Day tomorrow, I’m sharing it again…such a positive story about a school doing great things.
Not long now until the next round of Learning Conversations. These are held twice a year, and form a key part of our school reporting system. What sets the Learning Conversation apart from other ways of reporting…is the involvement of your children. They get to share what they have been learning, what they have been creating, what they are involved in, what they find tricky and what they are most proud of. Teachers get to chip in…talking through the HERO graphs and dials with you…and you have your chance to ask questions and have a yarn about your child and their progress.
Information will come home today…and the booking system in HERO will be opened up. Head to your app, and in the sidebar you can see the ‘School Bookings’ part…and you can manage your booking/s there.
On the last day of term our two roopu will be performing at the Kapa Haka Festival. Held at Wairarapa College, it is always an amazing event. The times we are performing are below…be aware if you wish to watch your child that during the performances the doors are closed, so you can only enter the WaiCol hall in between performances (5 mins).
We have been working on a statistical investigation during maths time. Tamariki are responsible for designing a new superhero academy training programme.
We have had to:
Step 1: Ask Questions
Step 2: Gather the Data
Step 3: Organise the Information
Step 4: Analyse and Plan
Step 5: Create the Ultimate Superhero Training Programme
Step 6: Share Your Ideas
Step 7: Reflect and Improve
Check out some of our mahi below!
It is time to sign up for Term 4 Sports. There are options for all year levels. Please ensure that your child commits to the entire season before signing up. We make the teams based on the amount of children that sign up. When children pull out part way through the season, it puts an unnecessary pressure on the team.
Please fill out this form by Thursday 12th September.
