The DPS Leaders Team were out of class yesterday to review the term, to look ahead to Term 4 and also to look over our termly academic data. These days can be hard on the head (lots of number crunching and thinking) but also so heartwarming to see the tales of progress, success and achievement.
These days also always remind us of the differences between children…none of us are alike, and all of us progress at different rates. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes a plateau, sometimes a giant leap for mankind…but never have I seen children move at a universal rate.
In saying that…we do have high expectations academically for the learners in our care, and they continually push towards these. This term we are close to being 80% Kūa Mārama or higher (at curriculum expectation or higher) across Reading, Writing and Maths (we are 76%, 77%, and 77% respectively) and we still have a term of powerful learning in front of us. We are higher now than we were at this stage last year (awesome!) and have every chance of finishing 2024 in a better place academically than 2023 (double awesome). Last year we finished with Reading at 83%, Writing 83% and Maths 84%.
Something that we celebrated yesterday was the achievement of the children who start DPS as 5 year olds and stay…for these kids the results are higher again, Reading 80%, Writing 83%, Maths 80%. This is a great recognition of what we do works, what we do is effective…and it works all while being wrapped up in the daily creative opportunities our kids get, wrapped up among the trips our kids get, wrapped up in the cultural mahi our kids get, and wrapped up among the other amazing opportunities such as sport. Our DPS Kids get a rich learning experience here at school…AND…do well academically.
Have a great holiday break, a chance for the children to recharge ready for a busy Term 4! Keep up the daily reading at home, share stories, visit the library, play board games, play cards, kick a ball outside…and we will see you all next term!
A new date has been found…so the Tararua Challenge is all good to go next term. Friday November 1st. Great that we managed to find a shared date that worked, and we can keep this key event happening for our kids.
Just a reminder...our out of zone process for Terms 1 and 2 2025 is underway. Please pass on to family or friends wanting to attend our school. Always (always!) someone will contact us after the process has finished and sadly they miss out.
Douglas Park is governed by an enrolment scheme (a school zone) and we only take out of zone enrolments twice a year. The next intake is for Terms 1 and 2. Anyone who lives out of zone comes through this process. Even if you have children here already and have a younger sibling to start...if you live out of zone, you have to apply for your child to attend.
Contact the office if you need to put your child/ren down for a possible place office@douglaspark.school.nz
Several DPS Kids were a part of the Masterton Swim Club team (Charlie, John and Reuben) who competed at the Wellington Junior Swimming Championships in the weekend. Masterton Swim Club finished 6th out of 21 teams, with John getting a medal, and Reuben being named as ‘swimmer of the session’.
John’s Mum emailed in with a photo, and noting that this is another example of our DPS values in action, especially Daring to Dream (Wawata). Well done swimmers!
