As mentioned last week, very soon our Board of Trustees will start work on our next 3 year strategic plan. They will want to hear from you...what do you want for your child? What are your hopes and aspirations? What does DPS do well already? What can we improve?
The school is very lucky to work with Mark Osborne (leading NZ educator) once a term, and the Board got to have an hour with him on Monday night. He mentioned two compelling reasons for why schools need to rethink approaches to teaching:
While these are challenges he also mentioned often about how our Core Beliefs, our play based learning environment and the continual push for kids to make and create are setting your children up well for the future. One of his statements stuck with me...our Core Beliefs are great, so it is now the job of the school to ensure our Year 6’s leave with these deeply ingrained.
The video below (I’ve shared before) captures some of the radical advances in technology...remember this is technology that is currently in use across the world, and even here in NZ! The robotic milking shed is here, in our country.
Our Rippa Rugby team are gearing up for next week...off (once again) to the National Championship! For the third year running the team will compete against the best schools in the country...against the larger cities, as well as smaller. An amazing feat to go back to back to back...and to play on the big stage against the very best. I know that the team will conduct themselves with PRIDE both on and off the field, that they will strive for Excellence, that they will fail, fall short, pick themselves up and try, try again. Real grit, resilience and the DPS Kid will be on show next week.
All the best team!
Over the last two days I’ve had a literal swarm of children come to my office to share their awesome creations with me. I’m really starting to notice now a growing sophistication in what the children produce, the problems they are trying to tackle and their ability to talk about how their making is helping them as a learner.
Three examples below...and it could just have easily been over 30!
Connor and Xavier came to some me the puppets they had created...the photo doesn’t capture the articulation, movement and control they had. Very cool!
Charlotte showed me her one bedroom apartment (including TV, laptop, iPad, toilet and shower). It even had a garage with car. The really cool thing was the background that she had hinged to fold away when not in use. Awesome work!
This one was super cool...Rylan has been working hard at his making this term, and two projects I shared with the school in celebration time. A working gun, and a marble maze. Yesterday he came to show me the creation below...a pinball type machine! Combining skills from both previous projects, he created something super cool. The video is an early iteration...he then went on to include traps and obstacles for the marble when fired out. Amazing!
Te Kuia Me Te Pūngāwerewere tells the story of an old lady and a spider who constantly argue & how they must work together in order to save the spiders world.
Taki Rua produces and develops te reo Māori children's theatre for schools around Aotearoa - a project they call Te Reo Māori Season. Their aim is to encourage students to use te reo Māori by providing positive reo - speaking role models.
The show is performed entirely in te reo Māori, but uses gestures and movement so that even non-speakers can follow along.
