The Board of Trustees are starting their work on the next Strategic Plan for Douglas park...the plan that will guide us for the next 3 years. This is your chance to have your say...what are the big picture ideas you have for the school, for learning, and for your child? A short survey will come out today, this is the start of the process. Early next term the Board will collate this data, and also look to hold some face-to-face hui as well. We want your voice, we want your ideas and we want your input into how we can make our awesome school even greater.
Our lovely Office Administrator and Librarian is off on a new adventure, starting next term. Angela (Mrs Carter) joined our team way back in 2013 in the Library, then starting in the office not long after. She has done amazing things to our library in that time, making it a very engaging place for young readers, and always bringing in new exciting stories for children to pore over. A key member of the office team and a great support to me as I stepped into Principalship...Angela was very patient with some of my questions and requests! All the best for the future Angela, you’ll be missed.
Survey due tomorrow, so here is a digital version that can be completed online, click here to complete. The teaching team with the largest % return will get a prize reward...can you help your child help their team? 5mins max is all it will take, and the school will gain some very valuable, rich information about where to next for DPS.
We get a lot of educational visitors to Douglas Park, coming to see how we operate, to hear our thinking, to view our amazing kids, to see their learning in action and to check out the incredible learning spaces that we work within. This term alone we have had nearly a group per week on average, with more lining up to come (first set come in Week 1 next term). Why us? Why are they coming here?
As you know (because your children come here) learning is changing, new skills are needed for the future, different qualities (such as our Core Beliefs) are considered vital for the future, and the way we operate in the world due to technology has altered the way society is. At DPS we are keeping up, modifying our learning, physically changing our classrooms, demanding different things from our learners...in order to better prepare them. Not all schools are headed down this path, or are as far down that path as we are. People want to come here because we have interesting stories to share, they know that DPS is pushing the boundaries of what is possible, they want to know our WHY and our HOW.
What does this really mean? To translate to another industry...if a cafe in town that you were a regular in started making coffee differently (you still think it tastes amazing)...and other cafes from out of the area were sending their people to learn how they were doing it, if people were wanting to hear about this new way of working to improve their cafes...you’d feel pretty good as a customer there, you’d know that you are getting a really amazing latte!.
The Board met this week and have decided to open up 20 places for Out of Zone students in Terms 1 & 2 next year. Information and applications will go out to those on our database, but feel free to let other interested parents know of this opportunity.
Lots of our DPS Students played soccer this season and came away with some awesome awards! Well done on all your dedication to your clubs guys. Here are a few kids who were recognised highly!

We are a local masterton based cricket club wanting to promote the game of cricket to interested junior players for the upcoming season. We are looking to offer cricket to school aged children that have taken an interest in the game of cricket, many thanks to the great efforts of our national team at the cricket World Cup earlier this year.
With support from current players and coaches we offer this program, without the request of teacher support.
Please be advised that Lansdowne cricket would like to invite all children who might wish to play cricket this year to our junior open day to be held on the Queen Elizabeth oval at 10.30am Sunday October 20th. This event will be some fun games of rapid cricket followed by a sausage sizzle and junior player registration of interest to play for the upcoming season. We also have a number of free prizes to be given away, courtesy of Wairarapa cricket association.

A month to give arts and creativity some serious oxygen.
This September the Arts Foundation, with the help of Creative NZ, Chartwell Trust, NZ Post, BJ Ball, Spectrum Print, NZME, Phantom Billstickers and Go Media, are going live and wide throughout New Zealand to create open and safe spaces to share what art is to Aotearoa. It's time to give the arts some much needed oxygen to help grow their understanding and support.
Arts Month aims to bring arts up on the agenda and map out Aotearoa’s own definition of art, while also acknowledging the arts and creativity as a valuable medium for a greater sense of wellbeing and connectedness in our communities.
Head to www.artsmonth.co.nz and get creative with the pencil, paintbrush, text, image, or spray-paint icons, then hit "post" to share your definition with the nation. #ArtsMonthNZ
