I’m writing this in the dark, at around 8.20am this morning the power went out as you are all aware. Here at DPS though our 6KW Solar battery kicked in...providing power to essential parts of the school (the office, telephones, security and wifi). This meant our systems were able to carry on, we could do the roll, contact parents and in classes, a lot of normal learning carried on. Children were using laptops, teachers accessing planning via wifi...just so lucky to have that battery here at school. When the power came back on, the battery was still carrying us through...a great piece of kit to have at school.
Rata and Kahikatea enjoyed some safe scootering lessons from Constable Julie this week. Learning how to ride safely, check for dangers, be prepared with a helmet. Each of the children in the two teams also went for a ride around the block to put these lessons into action. Staff got involved as well, great learning for everyone!
We are into the first year of the new Ministry school donations scheme...where we no longer ask parents for a donation, and in return they give us $150 per child. The deal from the Ministry is that because they are giving us extra funding, we can no longer charge for certain things at school and we have had two great examples of that this week.
The Footsteps dance company have been in and started to work with the kids. These workshops run weekly until near the end of the term, culminating in some mini-performances. Children have loved them so far. In the past we may have asked parents for some $$$ to go towards paying them, but the Ministry money is being used to provide this experience to the children.
This week the Rimu team went to Mt Bruce as part of their learning, again in the past, something that we would have asked parents to provide some $$$ towards. Taking buses anywhere isn’t cheap, but the Ministry money has gone towards these costs and providing a great experience for those children.
A date for the calendar, students will head home at 12.30pm that day. Staff will be completing some professional development looking at Wairarapatanga, developing our local cultural knowledge. Joe Potangaroa (who has worked with us before) will be with us for the afternoon. Having the children head home early is not something we do very often, so we greatly appreciate your support of this.
We have a team of DPS swimmers who placed in the top 8 in their races last week, and will now be invited to represent the Masterton Cluster at the Wairarapa Swimming Champs!

We are so lucky here at DPS to have such an awesome group of people working with our learners! Each week we will have a korero with some of our staff to help you learn more about us! Feel free to stop for a chat when you see us around school.
Our school is asking parents to use one of our Travel Pou over March to encourage families to walk the last 500m or so to school. This helps ease congestion in Cole Street markedly and get kids active before the school day AND we’ll stamp your passports at the crossings and hall gate! We have 4 Travel Pou. One located in Cole Street by the brick wall outside numer 96. Two in Essex Street. One located by “The Crossing” walkway between Essex and Cole Streets and a very popular one at the start of the walkway beside Douglas Park opposite Douglas Park School. This one is very popular because it is in line of sight from the school and you can watch your child walk or scoot all the way.
If you live close to school and don’t need to cross at one of the crossings come to the Pou located inside the hall gate at DPS and you may collect your stamp.
Your child should have received a second WOW passport on Friday. Make sure you name the passport and write the name of our school and when you have collected 10 stamps post it in the WOW box in the foyer. No name and school = no possibility of winning a prize!
More WOW passports have been ordered.
Last week Staglands donated all our Family passes for our parent photo competition. This week parents are in to win daily prizes to Zealandia!
Look out for Jack’s Favourite Friday competition every Friday where we’ll be giving away this adult scooter courtesy of Micro Scooters worth $359.95! Simply snap a photo of your family’s journey to school during Movin’March and win! It might highlight a small adventure or wonder discovered along the way, or capture a moment. To enter, post your photo publicly on Facebook or Instagram with #movinmarch. T&C’s are here
Whānau can also take part in our Share your Story and be in to win weekly Wellington destination prizes as well as a Bluebridge Family + vehicle pass on a return Cook Straight sailing.
We were lucky to have some Lakeview students come in and show our Year 3/4 students how to play Tapu Ae. Some of us will be going to a tournament at Lakeview later in the term to represent DPS.
Rātā and Kahikatea had a great time learning how to use scooters safely with Constable Julie this week.
Teams are displayed in the sports board and the draws are in this folder. They will be updated as they are sent to us.
Hi Everyone,
Just a reminder that we have now opened up the entries to Talent Wairarapa.
The closing date is 31st March 2020 - entry per act (not per person) is $5 and goes towards youth related projects nominated by Carterton Rotary Club.
This year we're looking for varied talent, you could tell a joke, read some of your own poetry, in fact you could be a slam poet, tell us some jokes (comedy is something we've not seen up to now), show us your best skit, talent, skill, with the chance to win big cash prizes at the Grand Final on 13th June at Carterton Event Centre.
Heats are 15th and 16th May - with Semi Finals on 30th May and 6th June.
