Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future

The school Leadership Group were out on Tuesday to work alongside a facilitator from the Springboard Trust on how to bring our Vision to life. I went through the Springboard Leadership Development programme last year (it was awesome!) and bringing the team along on Tuesday was a powerful next step for us as an organisation.

We spent the day looking at our Vision...thinking about where we are now (what it means, what we do already, what people might know about it) and where we could be in 3 years time...what would success look like? For staff, for students, for whānau and for our community...what does/could it look like to be Nurtured, to have Explored, to have Created and to be best prepared to impact a Better Future? Challenging things to think about...for us, the staff and children part is ‘easier’, but I would love your thoughts on what the Vision might mean to you as a parent, as a grandparent or as a community member. What would success look like? Flick me your thoughts: principal@douglaspark.school.nz

Laquarn's ATM

Cool creation made by young Laquarn last week. The photo below doesn’t show the true genius of what was made...you deposit money via the top slot, toy money coins. This drops into a lower chamber. You then insert your EFTPOS card (also created from cardboard) into the machine and the money you deposited then comes out the bottom of the machine. The clever mechanism is when you insert the card...it pushes the money down into yet another lower chamber that has a ‘slide’ for the money to slide out of the machine. So in essence...deposit money, insert your card and you can withdraw it! Very cool...but for me the real win from this was the effort, focus, and determination Laquarn had to show...it wasn’t easy, mistakes were made...but from mistakes come growth and his perseverance has led to this awesome creation.

Out of Zone Applications

Douglas Park is governed by an enrolment scheme (a school zone) and we only take out of zone enrolments twice a year. The next intake is for Terms 3 and 4 and the Board have opened up 20 places for out of zone students. Anyone who lives out of zone comes through this process. Even if you have children here already and have a younger sibling to start...if you live out of zone, you have to apply for your child to attend.

Contact the office if you need to put your child/ren down for a possible place. office@douglaspark.school.nz

Teacher Only Day and Easter Tuesday

Some upcoming dates for the calendar:

  • Thursday April 1st: Masterton primary schools (and MIS) are having a teacher only day. I’m one of the lead organisers and we have a great day of PLD planned for teachers and support staff across town. We are working with Janelle Riki-Waaka on culturally sustaining practice, Carolyn Stuart on Design Thinking and Derek Wenmoth on the future of education.

  • Tuesday April 6th: Easter Tuesday...yes, this is a real thing! I believe it is a hangover from the old 3 term years...but schools have Easter Tuesday off. It virtually always falls in the term holiday, but this year Easter is early...so Easter Tuesday comes into being.

Scarlett Wilson

Crash boom, it was a stormy night. I was on a boat with Alessandra and Lucy. We were scared. “Aaaaaa” we yelled. Then a big wave came. We landed on a tropical island and we had nothing to eat!

Milan Afegogo

Woosh I flew off into space. I landed on the shiny moon. Another rocket crashed into me. We were rocket twins.

Lachlan Thornburrow

I saw a giant T-rex and it had sharp teeth like a sword. The T-rex spat acid at me. Then it went back to its cave.

Lucy Monaghan

Wow! There is a magical unicorn coming to get me. I patted her on the nose and she licked me on the hand. She is so sweet and amazing. Her maine is rainbow and her tail is rainbow too. I got to ride her. She galloped like a cheetah. She was white like a cloud.

Charlie Gard’ner

Once upon a time Riley met a dinosaur with sunglasses. Riley poked his tongue out at the dinosaur. The dinosaur poked his tongue out too. The dinosaur said come with me, so Riley followed him into the jungle. The dinosaur ate Riley.

Community notices

Hospice needs your help!!!!

Have a few hours to spare Monday to Saturday? Keen to do something to "give back" to your community while working in a fun, vibrant environment...all for a great local cause?

Hospice Wairarapa are urgently looking for Retail Volunteers to help out in their Masterton store ½ a day per week. Your support would be very much appreciated by everyone that Hospice serves.

If this sounds like you please call 06 378 8888 or email volunteering@hospicewairarapa.co.nz for an application form, or pop in to collect one from the Masterton Store at 53 Queen St (opposite the library).
