As mentioned last week, more and more information is now going out via the HERO app. If you have signed into the app you will receive notifications from the app each time something relevant to you/your child is posted (it may pay to check that you have notifications enabled on your device). If you use HERO on a laptop/computer, you will receive an email with the notification. If you don’t get anything...that means we have an issue! Either you haven’t signed into the app, or perhaps we do not have an email address...or the correct email address for you.
The notifications are fairly personalised...they will be coming to you based on the group your child is in. This newsletter goes to everyone, but we also have posts going up weekly for each teaching team, the Winter Hockey draws go up for those children playing, Nga Tama Toa info, Russell Street cancellation...if you get a notification, the information is relevant to you. One of our Board members loved this feature...saves her scrolling through Facebook to find the right information...she can go right to HERO, and the information she needs for her sons is right there. The ‘Community Notices’ part is where to go.
We’ve had a few complaints come in about driver behaviour recently, so time for another reminder to our parent community. The complaints have been around people parking on the grass verge on Kummer Cres, double parking (and blocking traffic) out the front of school, and parent cars blocking residential driveways.
We appreciate that the 3pm pickup can be a busy time, and that parking is pretty limited out the front of school, but we need to be aware of the impact on our awesome neighbours. Having their driveways blocked (or cars park up their drive!) isn’t a fair or neighbourly thing to do. More and more parents are choosing to park over on Essex St, or down on Pownall St and have their children take a short walk to meet them...this is much appreciated by us all.
The Board has opened up places for 25 five year old students for the first half of 2021, Terms 1 & 2. If you live out of zone (even if you have children currently attending) and have a child you’d like to start with us in the first half of next year, please contact the Office to put your name down. We will send out the application forms early next term.
Also...if you know of parents outside of the zone who would like their 5 year old to attend Douglas Park, please get them to contact the office as well. It happens everytime...we complete the ballot process, then the following week people ask if they can attend (and they can’t).
Email the Office on office@douglaspark.school.nz for more information.
Another great experience for some of our learners this week, with children from Kōwhai, Rata and Kahikatea enjoying the Science Roadshow. As you can see from the photos below the children (and adults!) had a great time.
One of our awesome ex-pupils, Alexi, is the Young Adult Books Specialist at our local Paper Plus. Alexi was always an avid reader...and now is turning her passion into something by reviewing books for Paper Plus. Her first review is of ‘A Clue for Clara’ by Lian Tanner, and it sounds like a great read. The link below takes you to Alexi’s review...keep it up!

Our goal is for kids to learn the te reo PRIDE values and to use them as often as the english version. Use the following link to continue practicing
My special place is my house because a lot of my family lives there so I feel safe and comfortable. My house is the only house I've ever lived in so it's very special to me and my family has lived there for many years. Heaps of big things have happened in my house and something I will always remember is my pets that are buried in my backyard, all 8 of them, my 2 cats, 1 dog and 1 frog. But I also have my aunties pets buried in my house, her 1 dog and 3 cats. I have loads of pictures of me around the house and they help me remember a lot. I hope we never move because my house is very comforting and I’m very used to it. POPPY

My special place is the beach where I go crab hunting. I remember when me, Poppa and Mum went crab hunting and we saw a seal! It was very big. I still go there but when I want to go crab hunting the tide is always up. But that's ok because I still remember enough. Also another thing I remember is that I found a little white crab with black dots on it. We filled a bucket with salt water then took it to the beach house. The next day we released it and now I'm wondering how it's going? Has it been eaten or has it died of old age? Or maybe it's still alive?
I wonder… ROXY
My special place is my home country, because I have a lot of family that lives there. My home country is special to me, because I’ve lived there for 11 years. It is special to me, because i have a lot of memories of my family and friends there. The thing I would never forget when I lived there is living with my grandmother. She is the most important person in my life, because she is my dads mum and my dad's dad died when I was six or five years old. Those are the things that are special to me and that is my special place. BREEANNA
My special place is the stables next to Fernridge on Upper Plain Road Masterton.I have a horse there called Louie, it’s a French name. I love my Grandad and I get to spend time with him when I'm there and I really enjoy it. I've been going there nearly half of my life and I love going there. I have a lot of memories there like my old horse Missy that had to be put down. I will always remember that day. Also most of my family members have been riding horses so it is a very special thing for me. RILEY O
School photos will be taken next Tuesday, please ensure your children have correct uniform, tidy hair and clean faces! All orders for photos are due back no later than Friday 11th September, please hand in to the office.
We will load the draws into this folder for Netball, Hockey and Miniball. Make sure you check it every week!
Many thanks for your co-operation while we play at level 2. A reminder that teams are allowed a maximum of 16 in total including players, umpire etc - we are allowing ONE spectator per player. Please be prompt to drop your children to their game and collect afterwards.
A reminder to check the draw in Team 3 Sport - DRAWS folder or the Netball Wairarapa website. We really appreciate you having players at the courts on time and 'netball ready'. This means long hair tied up, nails cut, correct uniform/sneakers and NO jewellery to be worn.
It is very unlikely games will be cancelled, but if they are it will be posted on the DPS FB page or the Netball Wairarapa FB page.
Best of luck for your game!
Any questions...please contact Amy Williams on amywilliams@douglaspark.school.nz
REMINDER: draws can be found in this folder.
Primary Hockey will still be played at alert level 2. There are a few changes to ensure teams can still play. There will be hand sanitiser at the gates as well as the QR code for the Covid-19 app.
PLEASE NOTE
There must be no more than 16 people with each group, this is to include players, coach and spectators. Anyone else MUST remain outside the complex or in their cars. Each player will be allowed ONE spectator. There is no exception to this rule as the facility must keep numbers to a maximum of 100 at all times.
We have attached a turf map that shows you where you can go depending on the field that you are playing on. Please use the hand sanitiser and make sure children are not sharing their hockey gear. All teams must leave the grounds as soon as their game is finished.
The draw has been changed to accommodate the Level 2 restrictions. Please make sure you are connected to our school app, Hero, as there will be regular updates on there too.
