We mention failure at school and in this newsletter quite a bit. Seems odd at first, why talk so much about a lack of success? Don’t we want success for our learners? We do, it sits at the heart of all we do here at Douglas Park...but a massive part of being successful is failing, making mistakes. This image sums it up nicely:
Success is rarely a First Attempt In Learning...rather success comes after repeated attempts at a new skill, new concept, new piece of learning.
The book ‘Empower’ which I made mention of over the last few newsletters draws a distinction though between failure and failing that I hadn’t thought about. We do use the word failure here at DPS, but the authors say that Failure has a finality about it...you have failed, end of story. They prefer the use of the wording ‘failing’, this implies that you are still attempting, still trying...working your way back out of the Learning Pit.
I like this a lot, especially the implications of perseverance and determination in the face of the ‘failing’ you are doing. Building this resilience in children (in particular around their ability to learn) is a big part of what we do, and a part of our DPS Kid.
“Grit is passion and perseverance for very long-term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future, day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.”
Quote above is from the video linked below. A study into what makes a successful person, and why they are a success. The common factor was ‘Grit’. 6 minute clip, well worth the watch (and worth considering as Cross Country approaches!).
At the Young Leaders Day (see below) we heard from Riley Hathaway, from Young Ocean Explorers. She has her own web-series with her Dad exploring the ocean, and issues. Some of her work led to a group of Year 6 girls deciding to take responsibility for their environment, and they setup 1 + A Day, a promotion to ask people to pick up 1 piece of plastic (at least) a day to stop it getting into the waterways, then the oceans. Riley has seized on this, and is now promoting it. Wouldn’t it be great if our DPS Kids came up with their own call to action for people to follow, to help people take responsibility for their environment?
I had a great day out on Monday with our awesome councillors at National Young Leaders Day. The speakers were excellent, their messages all lining up well with what we are attempting to do here at DPS with learning. After just the first session I sent out a tweet to record some of these things that were being thrown at us
One message that stuck was: You don’t have to be ‘good’ to start, but you have to start if you are ever going to be good
The NZEI (teachers’ union) are currently negotiating with the Ministry for the pay and conditions of teachers. Last term I mentioned the teacher shortage (less people entering the profession, more people leaving) and that the Union isn’t just after a pay rise, they are trying to address this shortage. They have called another meeting later this term, so again we are asking for your support as we finish school early. This time we will send children home at 2pm (the meeting is in Carterton at 2.30pm). Thanks in advance for this.
2.00pm 28th June, Children home as teachers head to their Union Meeting
Mr Blue is a real legend...both out in the community and of course here within DPS. First here in the morning, he gets the classes warm for learning, keeps our school looking amazing and is a dab hand at fixing all the little breaks, leaks and mistakes that can happen in a learning day.
