Monday was a lovely day...firstly to hear that NZ has no active cases of COVID left, and then for PM Ardern to announce the shift to Alert Level 1 overnight. Level 1 brings us back to virtual normality at school, but has the continuation of the hygiene and cleanliness push. We still have hand sanitiser in all classes and the children are in good habits now with using this. Surfaces are also disinfected daily, and high touch areas like door handles are also done.
Parents have been welcome inside our gates throughout Level 2 and that carries on...but now we don’t need to sanitise your hands and capture your name as you enter. This also means we can restart our celebration times as of this week...and this week we will hold our usual termly powhiri to formally welcome all new students who have started since our term 1 powhiri.
The message around illness is still the same (and has always been our message, regardless of COVID)...if children are ill they need to stay home. When children fall ill during the day we will continue to call home and ask that parents/caregivers pick them up. The surface cleaning, hand sanitising, and children/adults being away when ill will limit the spread of any illness. Our attendance has been very high since coming back to school under Level 2...and a large part of that is because any illness can’t get a foothold nor spread within the school. Many thanks for your support of this.
Our school mentor Mark Osborne was in on Monday to work with staff...the start of our re-visioning process. Teaching teams had time with him to consider where to next, starting with “what do we value the most about Douglas Park School at the moment that we would like to see carry on?”. Across the teachers we had lots of commonalities...the big ones being Relationships + connection, Innovative teaching/learning (eg. the collaboration between teachers, the research we do) and our aim of developing the ‘whole child’...(eg. our Core Beliefs, and learning being much wider than just reading, writing and maths). Some similarities to the Head, Heart + Hand idea I shared in last week’s newsletter. The ideas from one group are shared below...what else could be added?
Across time we will be coming out to hear your voices as well...what do you value in what we currently do, or would like to see? As always, feel free to flick through any thoughts or ideas to me at principal@douglaspark.school.nz
Many thanks for your response to our call for helmets to be worn to and from school. It has been great to see the uptake and to see that our DPS Kids are that little bit safer on their journey to and from school. While the law sits behind having to wear a helmet when on a bike, we strongly advise that it should be the same for scooters/skates. It just takes that one car backing out a driveway, children unseen, for something nasty to happen. I’ve always said....child vs car, there is only going to be one winner and it won’t be the child!
Children are still allowed to use their scooters/skates at break times and we are encouraging those with helmets at school to wear them as they do so.
