Yesterday Joe, Mr Blue and their Eel crew of lads had an amazing time in the creek behind our school. Ashley from Wellington Regional Council came down and tested our water using a fancy machine ($20,000 worth!) and set some nets to catch anything living to see what life the creek holds. Two tuna were in the net, causing much excitement when they were brought out. A long fin and a short fin eel. Ashley took the time to explain the difference, and how you can easily tell them apart. The lads got to hold them which was a lot of fun. She also told us a few things we can do to improve the health of the stream, in particular doing some planting...look forward to that next step in the project.
Joe Potangaroa (Rangitane Iwi) came and spoke to us about the tuna...explaining some local stories, about their teeth and the way they kill their prey and about signs of them being stressed.
Peter Lee (the ex-Principal I wrote about last week who is generously sponsoring this work) also came down, and was impressed by how into it the boys are, the care and empathy shown to the eels, and the way they interacted with all the different adults there.
Love seeing this project develop, and I’m excited about what our young men are doing for themselves, for their environment and for our community. Nice work team.
The seasons are done, end of term 1 summer sports. Thanks to all the kids for your awesome mahi during games and practices, to the parents for all your support, and to our coaches...of whom most are teachers going above & beyond. We value the opportunities that sport brings, the relationships that are developed, the skills pushed and the learning qualities that come though (Grit, determination, daring to dream, collaboration, creativity, resilience...the list goes on!).
Congrats to the DPS Chargers Teeball team...winning their final against Hadlow, go DPS!

Thanks to all the parents who took time to come to one of the 3 Rimu parent sessions hosted yesterday. We appreciate the time you gave to us, the time given to start the relationship building between home and school. The one I went to was great, very positive with some excellent questions at the end.
One of the big drivers of learning here at DPS is Relationships, and at the heart of that is our want to get to know your child and understand them “know me as a person, grow me as a learner”. These sessions are a part of that relationship building process.
Part of the session was a video sharing about the Rimu Team...a neat little clip, well worth sharing to our school community
Thank you DPS Whanau and families for getting in behind Movin’March. As the weather is turning please continue to actively encourage your children to walk or wheel to school from one of the DPS Travel Pou. Add a raincoat and encourage that independence. Teach your children to cross the road at the pedestrian crossings between 8.15 and 8.40 am every day.

On Tuesday 14 of our Kahikatea students went down to Clareville to compete in a mini hockey tournament. The players fought hard even in the cold and wet and had a very successful day. Thanks to Sarah and Angela for coming down to help. We are excited for the hockey season to start!

Since 2009 the youth outreach team known as 'Souled Owt Kids Club' has been operating like an after school program. We engage the tamariki in activities that teach good morals, values and life lessons that will give them the skills to build healthy relationships. We also have fun playing sports and listen to good music with healthy food and everything is free. We usually only advertise this to the local neighbourhood that surround the Margaret street park but this year with the influx of children showing up with parents donating time and food we decided to send out a invite to the entire community to share our blessings. attached is a poster with all the info.
I am going to Japan for School (MIS) and I am selling my home made Harry Potter wands for $5 each as part of my fundraising efforts to get there.
Order yours today by texting mum on 0276003680.
Thank you very much for your support.
Kind Regards
