This week marked the last official meeting of our current Board of Trustees and signals the run down towards the upcoming elections. I’d like to personally thank our Trustees for the work and effort they have put into our school, into making this a great place for kids, for staff and for being bold in the direction we are headed. Brett, Trudy, Holly, Matt and Jane...you guys are awesome and should be proud of what you have achieved.
Nomination forms are on their way out to you and I encourage you to consider standing, to help guide the school into our learners futures. Watch this short clip...we want you! We are after 5 parent representatives...
and as we have shifted to a staggered election cycle this time around we will have 3 places for 3 years and 2 places for 18 months.
I was at swimming lessons with my son Henry in the weekend and got talking to another parent about how do we build confidence in children? We ended up speaking about Growth Mindset and the care we need to take when praising or talking to children about growth, about learning and about success. I explained that I didn’t have too many answers (I’m a young Dad and like all parents we are trying our best, but don’t always get things ‘right’) but I promised I’d put a bit more information out.
Our teaching staff are completing some online learning through Stanford University at the moment focusing on the teaching of maths, but the first major chunk of work has taken us back to what a Growth Mindset is (vs a Fixed Mindset). We use this language with our children, and this video below captures briefly some of the differences
People float in between the two mindsets, but the key can be to be aware of when you’ve slipped into a fixed pattern of thought and to be able to shift back into a growth way of being.
What can we do as parents?
Praise comes naturally to parents, we are all so proud of the things our children accomplish. Often though...our praise is aimed at their success, rather than the learning process they went through. Over time this could lead to a link developed for children where success is important (because I’ll get praised) and struggle/challenge/failing is not linked with praise...in other words, children stop taking risks, stop challenging themselves and don’t engage in deeper learning.
We can help avoid this as parents, to contribute to our child's view of themselves as a learner by thinking carefully about what we say and praise. Some ideas are below:
Sophie, Kiri and myself are in Wellington as you read this at a course run by James Nottingham. James has widely popularized the ‘Learning Pit’...something again we talk about at school. I won’t pre-empt what we are learning today but I do believe that teaching and talking about the Learning Pit is another way we can contribute as parents. Having a visual for them as they struggle with a new piece of learning (as they enter the Learning Pit) should be framed by us as positive and that new learning and growth can only come through challenge...if it is easy, have we actually learnt much?
In the video below James links the idea of Challenge and Praise and offers some tips for parents...rather than catching them once they have learnt/mastered a new skill, and praising them for success, can we spot when our children are learning something new and praise them for the learning they are undertaking? This links challenge and struggle, to learning growth and praise. They will see that we value growth, not just ‘success’.
This stuff links perfectly to our DPS Kid, and the idea that we want to help develop (in partnership with home) capable young children who view themselves as learners, who are not afraid by challenge, in fact...they are interested in challenging themselves, and children who view failing in a positive way...as steps towards ‘success’

I went down the slide from the top of my bunk bed and I whooshed down the slide.

As I think about green, it reminds me of blowing hard onto the slowly, wildly, moving grass. It slowly moves side to side like the Hula dance.
Green is sometimes lonely with no kids playing on it when the brown, crunchy, hard leaves land on the ground.

I could feel the water crashing into my hand. I saw the shiny water swirling around and blasting out of the slide. I heard the water going splish, splosh, splash! I was feeling quite freaked out and nervous because the slide was really big. Suddenly, I wondered what would happen if I slammed my head at the end of the slide. But it was awesome!

Blue is a colour that reminds me of the ocean. Blue smells like the moving salty water of the ocean. The colour blue makes me feel sad. Blue tastes like a blueberry. Blue sounds like a blue pukeko. Blue is the moving sky. Blue is the moving waves.

Since 2009 the youth outreach team known as 'Souled Owt Kids Club' has been operating like an after school program. We engage the tamariki in activities that teach good morals, values and life lessons that will give them the skills to build healthy relationships. We also have fun playing sports and listen to good music with healthy food and everything is free. We usually only advertise this to the local neighbourhood that surround the Margaret street park but this year with the influx of children showing up with parents donating time and food we decided to send out a invite to the entire community to share our blessings. attached is a poster with all the info.
