DPS Vision: Together we Nurture, Explore and Create for a Better Future

Nau mai, haere mai...a big welcome to all of our new students and whanau into DPS. Our Powhiri welcome last Friday was another lovely affair (despite a couple of technical hitches!), and it was great hearing Hazel’s Dad Matt speak on behalf of our manuhiri.

Neuroscience Lessons for us as Parents

I’ve come across a wonderful, wonderful resource that I’m going to share with you in the newsletter over the term.

Nathan Makaere Wallis is a well known NZ neuroscience educator. Some of you would have seen him speak, 2 years ago our whole staff had a day with him and we hosted a parent session that evening at school. He has partnered with Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu to create a set of videos for parents explaining the neuroscience of brain development (pre-school), and the neuroscience of learning (primary school).

Today I’ll share a couple of clips...one is his explanation of the brain, the 4 parts of the brain and how they work. This is covered in his pre-school material, but I share this as he refers to it in the school-aged videos. The second is his Intro to the videos I will share across the term. You can access them all at once, but I’ll drip feed them out via the newsletter.

Enjoy! And give me your feedback: principal@douglaspark.school.nz

Kapahaka

Kapahaka is back underway for 2021, and we have a new tutor. Jimbo Ratapu is running sessions for 3 teaching teams on a Wednesday, with all of Kōwhai, Rātā and Kahikatea taking part. Jimbo works with several local schools with great results. The children have been buzzing about it...very excited to be there, and very chatty afterwards! Looking forward to seeing this develop across the next few terms.

M3 Mindfulness

We have a visiting performance coming in Week 3 (Friday) by M3. A Wellington based outfit, they combine traditional Māori Storytelling with Movement and Mindfulness (the 3 M’s).

Jase and his M3 programme have been into nearly 500 schools, including several locally. You can read a bit more about him here, or have a watch of the brief video below. Everyone will get a brief 20-25 minute session with the team from M3.

Out of Zone - Closes Tomorrow

Just a reminder...our out of zone process closes tomorrow. Please pass on to family or friends wanting to attend our school. Always (always!) someone will contact us after the process has finished and sadly they miss out.

Douglas Park is governed by an enrolment scheme (a school zone) and we only take out of zone enrolments twice a year. The next intake is for Terms 3 and 4 and the Board have opened up 20 places for out of zone students. Anyone who lives out of zone comes through this process. Even if you have children here already and have a younger sibling to start...if you live out of zone, you have to apply for your child to attend.

Contact the office if you need to put your child/ren down for a possible place office@douglaspark.school.nz
