Another chapter written yesterday for this great sporting story, with Douglas Park going back-to-back winning the Tararua Challenge flag. This is the 5th year of the exchange and each year it has been the visiting school claiming victory...until yesterday. Our Kahikatea kids represented us with PRIDE in 5 codes, Hockey, Netball, Basketball, Football and Rugby, and we managed to win 3 of those 5 codes...which gives us the overall win! The weather seemed against us, but held off enough to make for a great day (and to be honest, what kid wouldn’t enjoy sliding on muddy grass in the name of sport!).
One conversation I had with a Russell Street parent I’ll share...she sought me out at lunch just to say how awesome, how polite, how competitive and how humble our DPS Kids were. She was blown away by their manners, and mentioned the things we have been working on (in particular saying hello to people and asking how they are). Proud of the kids for representing themselves so well.
Massive thanks to the parents who helped and contributed...coaching/managing teams, providing + serving food & helping on the day with the event. It means a lot to us to have your support, and makes for a great day for the kids. Thanks also to the staff, particularly the Kahikatea teachers, for all the work, planning, setting up and running of the event...these things don’t just happen, they get made to happen by great people. I’ll single out Amy Williams for leading the event and Mr Blue from doing everything from marking fields, coning off the street, supplying mouthguards and working with the netballers. Cheers team!
A reminder about this, no school Monday 5th August (next week). As a school we don’t take many of these days, but this is an amazing opportunity for our staff to hear from a real expert. Fernridge and Douglas Park have worked to bring Nathan Wallis back to the region, and he is working with our schools (and a few others) for the day. He is also running a parent session at Douglas Park that night which has proven to be very popular, selling out quick...even with extra tickets being released. It is exciting to have such an expert (and great speaker) come to work alongside out staff (Support Staff as well as Teachers will be attending) to help us see the relationship between brain development, and primary school education.
Teacher Only Day - Monday 5th August Teacher Only Day - Monday 5th August
On Wednesday Kahikatea had the pleasure of hosting Russell Street School for our annual sports exchange. We had a lot on the line this year, being that no hosting school has ever won the flag - and of course we wanted to keep it! While the weather wasn't perfect, we didn't let it ruin our day. We all played hard, cheered for all the teams, and made some wonderful friends.
Thank you to all the whanau that helped coach, prepare food, or support our teams. You guys are amazing and we wouldn't have been able to have the day that we did without you all!
Below are the scores and photos of our Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award recipients from both Russell Street and Douglas Park.
